Dear god, I hate that armor. Just... too much for the cheese that is Power Rangers. I'm afraid the movie is going to take itself way too seriously.
I dunno how you can possibly get "too cheesy" for Power Rangers of all things. It looks goofy and weird, yes, we can both agree on that though
Think you have misread that - it's "too much for the cheese that is Power Rangers" - as in the armour is taking itself to seriously for the cheesy nature of Power Rangers?

It does look a bit like it's about to be reinvented as some sort of tween drama.

It looks like they're trying to make it more serious, but it actually looks more silly. In other words, they have become

Ah, they try to make power rangers more "realistic" and "dark" by slapping details onto everything.
That's cute.

This really looks like they're trying to go for an Iron Man/Guyver look, and failing. There is not going to be another live-action Guyver after the disaster of the first one, and the above average of the second movie. Even though I like Guyver: Dark Hero; plus it has Solid Snake as the lead role. The company that owns Guyver bought the rights back after Dark Hero, and refuse to do any live-action adaptions ever again. Speaking of Guyver, did the manga even finish? There was a new Guyver anime, but that only lasted 26 episodes and ended on a cliff hanger.

In terms of "edgy" it looks like a cross between Ow, the Edge and LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR. Also, my favorite video about being edgy.

<spoiler=Edgy>
Seriously though, Power Rangers was always goofy. Did the series have bad ass or serious moments done well? Yes, but that wasn't the main focus. The original Power Rangers movie is starting to look even better now.

The metallic apperance is off putting.

How how the heck does the face part of the costume appear like morph in or something? It pretty much gonna be done in cgi.

Billy being black and Zack not just.....urks me. I mean seriously the diversity was built in. WHY WAS IT NECESSARY TO CHANGE THIER ETHNICITY!?

On the other side, yeah don't mind the armor, it just looks like a bad ass movie version of the actual costumes.

The helmets look superimposed onto a cropped version of their faces. The cg integration is terrible. I actually don't mind the costume designs too much (aside from the pointlessly busy textures), but they look more like they belong in a high end CG film than a live action one.

Haha, that's exactly what I thought. Is that Don Cheadle?

But really, it looks really bad. Just bad cgi, practical effects would be the best, and should have been the only choice.

They look "weird". Not necessarily bad weird, just weird for Power Rangers... Like they were trying to design for a different sentai series (one with an insects motif) and were given the rights for the IP after the fact.

The insect-like armor is quite in line with the changes done to Rita Repulsa.

Apparently this movie is sort of green with evil but with Rita taking Tommy's place.

Because then you'd have the Black Ranger being Black. Which is bad. For some reason. I don't know, I never even noticed when I was a child watching the show, so whatever.

As for this, tbh I don't see the problem. They've certainly got some thematic similarity with the Rita costume, which isn't a bad thing as consistent visual aesthetic is always good (especially if they're going back to Rita and Zordon's shared past). Nothing here top change my opinion of the flim. Really hope it'll be good, will almost certainly see it, but won't be surprised if it's an ungodly mess.

Well, as someone else mentioned, I'm gonna have to see them in motion before I can actually say whether or not I like this new look. One thing about this new look I can say for sure that I don't like, is the mouth. I can't stand the visible lips. Yes, I know the classic Power Rangers also had the part over their mouths look like this, but I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. Was really hoping they wouldn't do that we these new costumes.

Kinda disappointing.

Of course they will redesign the armor but I was hoping for helmets like something the ones in the original had. The dinos they ride were designed into the helmet in the original. I can see eyes on Red's helmet, so maybe it looks better from the front?

Is it weird that the thing I'm most bugged about is the fact that they're open faced helmets. Doesn't that kind of go against power rangers design? The only time I remember those helmets opening was when they were damaged.

The helmets do close, earlier promo pics show it. So it's probably for down time and breaks in the action.

Gotta show them actors' faces or you aren't getting your money's worth.

I never got into Power Rangers (it was the one thing I wasn't allowed to watch growing up), so I can't muster up any nerd rage. And I'll give props to the movie for following Iron Man's example and having semi-fullface helmets.

Apart from that, the real problem with these costumes is that they look expensive. Expensive and Power Rangers do not go together.

My problem is more along the lines that they open in the first place. They never did that in the show. It just feels like Venom in Spider-Man 3.

Yeah...no one can just do a Deadpool

It is a step up over the norm I suppose.

Expensive and power rangers. *Snort* No. No they do not. That's kind of why I think this is doomed to fail. Power Rangers is silly and cheesy, but it's what makes it Power Rangers. This feels like it's trying to be like that dark fan film without any of the irony.
