Note: I am in America, so I have only just seen The Time Of The Angels/Flesh And Stone two parter. Those of you in England who are luckier than me and are about three episodes ahead, please keep this in mind. Also note, this is all just my opinion.

All right, this new season of Doctor Who is really starting to irk me. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's better than most shows on TV anymore, but it just doesn't feel like Doctor Who to me. Part of the draw, at least for me, was in the same formula for why Sherlock Homes worked. As anyone who's read an Sherlock Homes novel will tell you, it is impossible for your to predict the actual outcome. Oh, you can be close, and maybe even know whodunnit, but you will never know exactly who, exactly why, and exactly how. This is because, until the big reveal, you never have all the pieces to the puzzle. Oh sure, (to continue the analogy), you have all the border pieces, and maybe even a few of the inside pieces, but even though you can get a general idea what the puzzle looks like, you won't know the details. This season, they seem to give you all the pieces, and then wait till you've figured it out before the Doctor does. That doesn't work for me.

For example
In Flesh And Stone, there is a scene where Amy starts counting down from 10 without realizing it. I personally picked up on it at 8 (although I was suspicious at 9), the Doctor picks up on it at 7, and Dr. Song at 6. Ideally, as an audience, you should be picking up on it somewhere between the Doctor and Dr. Song.
I figured out exactly what the Doctor figured out, a step before him. Now, this isn't me gloating. I think a lot of people would have picked up on it. However, the Doctor is supposed to be quicker than us. If we can figure it out, what do we need the Doctor for? He is supposed to be slightly smarter (although with a lot more knowledge), slightly quicker, and just basically slightly better than everyone else. I don't get that feeling from him this season. In fact, this is reinforced when
The Doctor yells at Dr. Song. Not because she did something wrong, not because she was going to get them all killed, but simply because she pointed out what seemed like obvious flaws in his plan. In fact, a couple times this season he has yelled at people for pointing our why his plan stinks, when the plan actually does stink! On top of that, he has said (about three times that episode) that he doesn't have a plan, doesn't know what's going on, and is as in the dark as everyone else. Used occasionally, that is a fine way of building tension, but as often as they use it this season, it just makes him look like a pretender.

Also, I love how the seasons usually have some background thing tying them together. I never picked up on Bad Wolf until after the Doctor, and never realized how pervasive it was till they went back and showed us. This season, they are basically slapping you in the face with it every episode. They are purposely making sure you know it is there, like some bad magician telling you to keep your eyes on the pocket watch before he fumbles the disappearing act and shoves it up his sleeve. This doesn't make us feel smart, it just makes you look dumb.

And finally, plot wise, the group going in knew they were going to be handling (a) Weeping Angel(s), yet all they brought with them to take care of it were guns, which for some reason even though it's the future, aren't powerful enough to do more than chip stone. I personally, would have at least brought a sledgehammer. And don't even get me started on the expansion of the Angel's powers. There are just too many flaws there for me, not to mention they feel like the bad guy version of a Mary Sue./rant

All right, that's it, I swear. Ranting done. Now go ahead and tell me what you think of the new season, and as always, please use the spoiler tag when appropriate.

I like how the new Doctor doesn't know what he is going to do until he has finished speaking. I also like the look of the new sonic screw driver and how the Doctor doesn't like being interrupted (like me).

Can't stand the new actors and am not happy that "The Moff" sees Dr Who is a bit of a daft old buffer - I have no interest in that character.

I know what you mean, I have noticed in some cases this issue, but alongside it I have noticed something else. The Doctor seems to deliberately not notice things, or more to the point, deliberately not point out he's noticed things. I have come to like the way the new Doctor works, he comes across as much smarter by not overdoing it. I get the impression from watching that the Doctor always has an idea what's going on from the second they arrive, and he's still just trying to find an answer or trying to make sense of it all when he says something.

In your example, I felt that the countdown was noticed earlier on by the Doctor, and he simply didn't mention it until later.

Whether this has been more in recent episodes or not I'm not sure (UK pace here) but it's never irked me as much as you.

Wait till you see the Amy's Choice episode and then see if you can still figure it out before the Doctor ;).

I'm really digging Amy Pond thus far. The new doctor isn't great though,I miss tenant.

Something that really bugs me about Doctor Who is their constant need to go back to cardiff or london every four episodes. You have a machine that can manipulate time and space!! They could at least try filming in america for a change. It's like the whole world revolves around Cardiff and London.

Steven Moffat is known for intricate, complicated plots. I think by saying that the crack is the one ongoing arc is to underestimate him.

Also,
Matt Smith said in an interview there were 5 different recurring themes in the opening episode. The crack, presumably, is but one.

I don't think thats why he shouts at her. He shouts at her because he finds out let the priest die

I'm going to wait a while before I pass my full judgement on this new series, but to me it's just not beating the first searies they did in the reboot. Eccleston is still my favourite.

Ya, i really hate the new doctor who...

I feel like the heart has gone. Sure it looks nicer but that was never what it was about.
The new actors i dont like.
and i feel like that its aimed more a kids now and that the only thing supposed to be keeping me, an older viewer, entertained is Amy Pond's sex appeal.
They got too cocky.

Just thought I'd like to inform you, the next episode you'll see will suck. Really badly. Although I guess that's just my opinion. The one after that is good though.

The Doctor/Sidekick relationship in this one actually really annoys me. Sometimes it feels like they're trying desperately hard to make Amy seem useful.

I like that about the show that it comes back to landmarks ive been to and everything, makes it seem like a classic british show.

The thing that really annoyed with me about the new Angel episodes, apart from pretty much everything the OP said was
{the entirely selective effect of dumping the angels into the time erasing vortex, how it meant the angel in Amy's mind was never there, but the men the angels killed were still dead. Plus the only reason they were there in the first place was to stop the angel, which then hadn't ever existed so there was no point to them being there.}
Now I've been told that I'm thinking too much about the sense of it, but it still bothers me.
It's about as bad as the Sontarans (did I spell that right?) in Season 4 not being able to kill any UNIT soldiers once the humans could shoot back, not very impressive for what the show says are the best soldiers ever. That was when the show really jumped the shark and I could ignore the plot holes no longer.

Still watch it though.

EDIT:

You really hit the nail on the head here. It seems to me like Matt Smith is trying to be David Tennant, not provide a new, interesting personality with a different fell like the change we got with Eccleston becoming Tennant.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure whether I stand on the atmosphere of this season. I keep going back and forth between praising Matt Smith's doctor for being more understated than his predecessor's jumping about(the only characteristic of his that I didn't like) and complaining about Karen Gillan hogging the screen, providing the solution pretty much all the time.

This season shouldn't be called Dr Who, it should be called Amy Pond. The Doctor is just the means by which Amy Pond, nobody from nowhere, travels through time and space sorting problems.

Is one things with pointy teeth that are supposed to be able to fly but never get around to it (Vampires, Angels, and, if you think about it, nobody ever saw Prisoner 0's body or whether he was actually hanging on to something)?

I have pretty mixed feelings overall. But I think most of them derive from me being too used to how Davies wrote the Doctor not to mention Tenant's portrayal (and Eccleston's for that matter).

You're only behind a couple episodes and you'll probably feel about the same for the next episode, but the newest one (Amy's Choice) as pointed out in an earlier post is a good bit more interesting imo. Though it didn't feel like it tied to anything else when it comes to an overall story arch, it was still a much stronger revelation of truth than most have had lately.

I disliked this incarnation a bit at first, but he's begun to grow on me I think.
