New Side-Scrolling Mario game announced for 3DS

I can already hear Yahtzee and his misguided fanboys whining about this game being similar to previous games in the franchise despite literally no other information being released about it.

Of course, even if it is basically the same game as New Super Mario Bros, I'm still anticipating this. Until the series gets as blatant as the numerous Street Fighter II versions and ports, I'm still buying it, because I actually understand the concept of a sequel (you like a game, and you want another one like it) and know that a game sticking to an established formula that works is better than inventing a new one that may not work at all.

Seriously. How many times does Ocarina of Time need to be remade?
We already got it in two compilations on the Gamecube/Wii.

I'm just saying: Remakes/relaunches are neat and all, but where's the new content?
It's a sad state of affairs when you have access to great portable hardware, and it's wasted converting older games into a gimmick.

A gimmick that's now dying, no less.

Honestly: I don't give a flying fuck about what Yahtzee thinks. He whines and cracks wise for our entertainment, but I would never use one of his reviews as the basis for serious criticism.

I am simply tired of Nintendo's increasing reliance on relatively fewer and fewer core franchises.
What happened to the neat newer stuff like Pikmen?
Hell, I'll even accept the middle road if I can get a decent Intelligent Systems game (Fire Emblem or Advance Wars) out of it.

But really, they're doing yet ANOTHER Mario platformer already?
I still have Super Mario Land 3D; it's scarcely three months old!

Maybe once there's more of a variety maybe then. But now? It looks more like Nintendo is desperately trying to scrape up something stable to make some cash using this logic: "Mario Land 3D sold well, so lets do another one!"

Right now, I'm looking at maybe Kid Icarus for variety in the future here, but even that's not helping my confidence in the 3DS; since the game keeps getting pushed back month after month.

They're not. It's what the people are asking for. The Nintendo fan base and major consumers therein love these games and want more of them. Prove me wrong.

And that's a dodge (often times used when a person knows the other is right mind you), however it wasn't really a challenge to come up with some sort of way to show that I'm wrong in the first place. The facts speak for themselves. If people were tired of Zelda and Mario games, they wouldn't be selling to this day. The demand is there, constantly.

No, it's a fallacy. You are relying on me to provide proof against your argument in lieu of you providing proof for your argument. But for the sake of discussion, I'll ignore that and address the problem more directly.

Yes, the demand is there. But remakes alone do not make a great system.
Fact is, Nintendo is in the worst shape they've ever been financially this very moment.

A big part of that involves their over-reliance on older franchises and weak third-party support. Those perennial franchises are great in the best of times, but right now Nintendo is using them as life-support.

During the announcement of the 3DS, Nintendo's support and games list was first-class.
So what happened to that support?

This is a shot in the dark, but if I were a game developer, I'd think twice about developing for Nintendo's system, on account of low confidence in their current business strategy.
The only good news right now is that sales are *finally* picking up.

The big thing you gotta remember, these aren't only being purchased by the old school gamers. My little sister is 14 and had never played the original Zelda, or Zelda 2, or Link to the past, or even Wind Waker. But she got Ocarina of Time 3D, and after completing it went out and bought Twilight Princess and reserved Skyward Sword.

They appeal to new markets.

Not enough, apparently. I hope they turn it around. As harsh as I am on Nintendo here, I genuinely want to get some use out of my 3DS apart from playing yet more bloody Mario games.

Seemingly not. The purpose of a sequel is to build on the original, not to be a clone of it. A sequel doesn't have to completely re-invent the game, but if they don't add anything new at all then it's not a sequel, it's a remake.

It's understandable if you like the game, and just want to play an upgraded version, but that's not a sequel. It's ok if you want a remake, but you can't pretend that it's a sequel if that's the case.

Does this really surprise anyone? They have an extremely successful thing going on. Why wouldn't they continue it?

That being said, I personally couldn't care less about this because to me, the games have been extremely similar for the past few years.

Also, I fucking hate the 3DS joystick. I hate it with a burning passion and wish that it would die in a fire. Or a trampling. Or a fiery trampling.
