The first Silent Hill is rather bad, imo. Perhaps the worst.
Of the first four? Definitely, but that's more a matter of it having aged poorly than it actually being bad. The characters were doofy, but that was pretty damn standard at the time. The graphics age poorly, but the sound is still pretty fucking terrifying (aside from the nurses sounding kind of . . . male? I really don't know how to say that without offending transsexuals, so I apologize in advance,) and it's certainly not a poorly designed addventure game. There are very few instances of "You Have To Burn The Rope" if get what I'm saying.

Jim Sterling, just played it and previewed it on Destructoid, despite him being an avid Silent Hill fan he liked Book of memories.
And, much as I love him, Jim Sterling is a notorious troll. He also once professed his undying love for Dynasty Warriors.

So liking a series like Dynasty Warriors means you're a troll? Wow... Never knew liking a franchise can mean you're a troll. One that he loves but from reviews is also quite critical of.

I believe he stated he was a huge fan of the Silent Hills series and was hugely skeptical of book of memories.

Also, considering the central idea of Silent Hill wasn't it doomed to have a short shelf life anyway?

"You do something bad, and the town tortures you for it."

That's inevitably going to get old, and it certainly has.

Worst part of this? The music, what the hell is with that music? It doesn't really say tense atmosphere or horror in any way.

Captcha: move along Good idea.

Oh so you wanna play that game then? Alright:

1) Dynasty Warriors is among the most despised franchises in gaming. I think that really isn't very debatable.

2) Jim Sterling said that he not only likes it, he loves it.

3) Jim Sterling is also known for giving other games that most people not only hate, but find objectively terrible good reviews, and he gives bad reviews to games that people love and/or think are objectively good (Dear Esther being the most recent example I can think of.)

Jim Sterling is a troll. I just made a good argument for it, but that was already his reputation, and it goes without saying at this point.

What..? Not the most popular but most despised? Bullshit.

2) Jim Sterling said that he not only likes it, he loves it.
Still don't see how loving a franchise is considering trolly. So if I like Call of Duty or Halo, actually not like, LOVE, then I am being a troll?

3) Jim Sterling is also known for giving other games that most people not only hate, but find objectively terrible good reviews, and he gives bad reviews to games that people love and/or think are objectively good (Dear Esther being the most recent example I can think of.)
Objectively good? A game can't be objectively good, many found Dear Esther boring, not everyone loved it. It's called an opinion, learn what it means.

Jim Sterling is a troll. I just made a good argument for it, but that was already his reputation, and it goes without saying at this point.
No you basically stated because he doesn't follow the norm, and give low reviews to games you like or others like. Just because YOU liked the game doesn't mean he does.

Hell, I tried Dear Esther when it was a mod, and it was DAMN boring, not even artistic, just boring. It wasn't even that interesting.

Heck, for example, Half-Life 2, most would give it a 9/10 or 10/10.

I would get it barely a 7/10, maybe diping into the 6.5/10 territory. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't nearly as good as everyone made it.

Guess I am a troll?

The difference between you and Jim Sterling though is he very clearly does it to troll. Why else would he end a show in "Thank god for me," and literally suck a dildo on it? I'm not saying he doesn't think the things he says, but he very clearly has the objective in mind to piss people off.

Who cares anymore?

Does anyone out there really expect this franchise to actually get good again?

I mean, really?
Actually downpour was pretty good, IMO. It was a faithful continuation of the good silent hill games (2,3,4, and maybe the first one? never played that one). While not perfect it did understand that silent hill was more then just gore and chopping off limbs (or having yours chopped off).

That said, it did make me think that the franchise could rise to a better place again as long as it has the right creative director behind it

Also to be fair, this game does look like a terrible idea.

Perhaps is was just an issue of technology limiting the game's potential, but it still made for a dull game, in my opinion. It wasn't until the third Silent Hill that I feel it all came together for the series and the brand reached its pinnacle. I especially love the character work in Silent Hill 3 and I'd argue Heather is the most well formed and expressed protagonist of them all. The soundtrack and general sound design is also fantastic.

What the fuck was that shit, they would be better off just porting the old games, they would even look better.
This crap doesn't make sense on any level even from an accounting standpoint, so WTF Konami... did you haveto fill your quota of stupid for this year or what.
