Valve has updated the TF2 blog, revealing the Soldier's new weapon; the Direct Hit.

The Direct Hit appears to be a rocket launcher designed for players who shoot at their targets rather than their feet. It has a much smaller blast radius, but the rockets travel much faster and pack a bigger punch. They also guarantee a minicrit when they hit airborne enemies. While this weapon certainly doesn't change the Soldier as much as the Eyelander did for the Demoman, it still provides a new play style.

Valve has also updated the casualty report and created a new comic themed around the War event.

So what do you guys think of the new weapon? I think this could actually see a good amount of use amongst both pub and competitive players. Rewarding players for direct hits with catastrophic damage is highly appealing. Though the original Rocket Launcher will certainly still serve a purpose with its large blast radius.

Sounds awesome. Can't wait to try it, although I'll probably suck with it.

Sounds pretty bitching, though I feel like it'll end up being a lot like the brute shot from halo 3. We shall see...

Man, I can't hit an air target to save my life. But I guess I'll just have to work on that, eh?

Also, am I the only person saddened a little by the backstory to the update? Good friends talked into fighting each other against their will?

Even with the Direct Hit hitting an airborne target is still going to be difficult. You'd think they'd reward you with a crit rather than a mini-crit. Though maybe crits combined with the increased damage is insanely overpowered.

And Yeah, it actually is kind of sad. And yet were encouraging every moment of it to get shiny new weapons. My god we're horrible people.

Yes I am joking

Probably just a mistake Valve made. Or maybe they plan to reveal the bugle mysterious new weapon tonight.

Do you think they are going to make a new Meet The Team Video?
Probably. People believe that Meet the Medic will pop up some times this week. Though this is all just speculation.

Do you think they will save pyro for last, to see if it is a boy or girl?
Probably, since Valve wants to keep the rumors surrounding the Pyro going on for as long as possible. I doubt they will even reveal who the Pyro really is.

Oooooh this thing is going to be really NASTY. It says the damage radius is only going to be 30% of normal, but it's going to do 25% more damage and fly 80% faster. That's too fast to dodge at medium range. They've turned it into AvP 1's SADAR.

Can't wait to get my hands on one. Glee!

You realize that with the 25% damage boost that the minicrits would be doing somthing like 160 damage, right? Thats enough to one-shot most classes. Airshots with this thing will be much easier too because of the faster flight speed.

Ooh, even better! You can use it at close range against pyros and the like. Not only can you use it at point blank range without blowing yourself up, but it'll be much harder for pyros to airblast them.

Joy!

Never played TF2. Is it really worth checking out?
That depends.

If you get it on the PC, then it most certainly is. It's one of the most highly praised and popular multiplayer FPS games on the market. But if you have to get it on the 360 or PS3, I would skip it. Simply isn't worth it without all the additional content they've added to it. Lack of support has dwindled the console player base down to pretty much nothing.

Valve is going to have another free TF2 weekend to celebrate the update. So this will give you an opportunity to try the game for a full 3 days, and then decide if you want to purchase it based on that.

They probably planned to reveal two like the demo, but changed their minds and forgot to fix that.

Anyway, amazing weapon, and amazing comic to go with it. I always wondered what the soldier was like off-duty.

I still think the sword and shield for the demo is a more interesting concept... Still want this to try out though.

This makes me wonder why they haven't incorporated real life awesome weapons in any shooter. I was watching an episode of modern weapons and the guy was showing a gun that could bend and look around corners so none of your body is sticking out. Its make you wonder... why didn't i think of that.
