It's mad how the original series had more interesting looking alien planets than these new films.
Said planets including:
-Planet that imitates the Nazis
-Planet that is Ancient Rome in the modern day (or 23rd century)
-Planet of the Yangs and Comms, with all the eye-rolling baggage that entails
-Planet that space hippies want to go do, where everything is acidic (which is kind of interesting, however silly the premise is)
-Planet that undergoes parallel planetary development with Earth because of a "Law of Parallel Planetary Development" (yes, really), and is populated by kids who fear "grups"
TOS had plenty of nice ideas and episodes, true, but let's not pretend that some of them weren't outright bonkers and/or poorly written drek.
That said, this trailer doesn't fill me with much confidence either. We have "not Avsarala" instructing Kirk, who gets the Enterprise attacked by "not formics," with said ship boarded by "not Vanir" (or the aliens from Battleship if you want), where on the surface we meet "not Rey" (hey, at least she's an alien this time - seriously, Rogue One irks me for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that it's still playing the "humans only club" card), where Earth is attacked AGAIN. Oh, and a teleporting motorbike. Because a regular motorbike just isn't cool enough.
I quite liked the previous two movies, but this...this is something else. I feel what's most telling is that "Beyond" takes up most of the title card, with "Star Trek" having the size of a subtitle, and that Justin Lin is proclaimed as the director of The Fast and the Furious. A true statement, but not something you'd usually associate with Star Trek.
At this point, as far as sci-fi movies go this year, I'm actually looking forward to Passengers more.
Edit: Minor point, but it looks like the original Enterprise is destroyed, yet they get a new ship. Is it just me, or does it look a bit like the NX-class (the ship from Star Trek: Enterprise)? If so, that's kind of a nice touch.
