It's a personal taste that's for sure.
It's just sad from my POV that swashbuckling "skywalkers" appear to have been replaced by such wet lettuces.
It's not that I don't think you can have films like that, it's that for me Star Wars' true strength was it's heroic backbone and "wow" factor. so it'll be a shame if it continues to walk the same, wimpy path which has seen it de-volve over 30 or so years.
I can see why the softer approach would appeal to some, but to me it loses one of the massive things which made A New Hope such a draw.
I don't know man, I recall Luke spending 90% of A New Hope whining, first about being stuck on the ground, then about having to do chores, then about Obi Wan trying to get him not to do them, then about Han and his ship, some swashbuckling (Mostly running away) a cool grapnel swing, more whining, Obi Wan dies, Luke sulks, before finally standing up and being a real hero at the end and destroying the Death Star.
I really don't see how anything we've seen here is mopier, whinier, or more "emo". The only swashbuckler in A New Hope was Solo, and he spent a good deal of that yelling at people and running away. I don't see how these characters are somehow not going to be able to be heroic, or even that we've seen that much. Boyega's big debut in Attack the Block, was a whole load of heroism, and hacking up monsters with swords, he put in an amazing performance there, so I don't see why he can't do it here (And if you haven't seen Attack the Block, you should see it, because it's amazing).
Really, Luke only stops whining in the third film (He even bawls like a baby after losing his hand and learning that Vader is his father), at which point, he has in fact, become a legendary space wizard.
You and I remember Star Wars very differently.
