Clearly I cannot speak to your desire to avoid "emo" heroes or "pussies". I personally have no desire to return to the stone jawed action heroes of the 80's, a trope that was semi-permanently retired with Die Hard, and good riddance to it. There's nothing wrong with a hero being afraid. As Eddard Stark quite famously quoted "The only time a man can be brave is when he is afraid".
Seconded me for this feeling too. I kinda like a hero who feels fear but still picks up that lightsaber and faces down a Sith Lord no matter what.

As for the trailer? Well, I'm a pick excited now but I'll hold any and all judgment till I see the bloody picture and have a little time to process is.

That's what I'm eluding to. Movie star quality. The new gen seem more geeky/emo/wimpy and that ain't what I personally want my heroes to be.

And yeah I was a kid, but I still love having a hero I'd love to be.

Earlier someone mentioned the black guy looking terrified as he squared up to Ren. That aint what I wanna see, a man trained for all his life to fight as a storm trooper bricking it like a pussy. I wanna see someone who'll eyeball him and relish the challenge, even if they're a green farm-boy.

It's a personal taste that's for sure.

It's just sad from my POV that swashbuckling "skywalkers" appear to have been replaced by such wet lettuces.

It's not that I don't think you can have films like that, it's that for me Star Wars' true strength was it's heroic backbone and "wow" factor. so it'll be a shame if it continues to walk the same, wimpy path which has seen it de-volve over 30 or so years.

I can see why the softer approach would appeal to some, but to me it loses one of the massive things which made A New Hope such a draw.

The trailer looks awesome

CON
I have no idea what this movie is about

No spoilers to speak of

The lack of Mark Hamill in any of the trailers has made me almost cocky when it comes to telling people, "He's going to be revealed as Kylo Ren"

PRO
...I got nothing else...It'll probably be better than Phantom Menace and I'm hyped up.

Just to add to that, it really does feel as if Luke kicking some major arse is the only thing which can save this film from it's lack of any real heroic hero.
Well...

This wouldn't be the first Star Wars where the trailers didn't exactly convey stellar characters and exciting heroes.
I think the weirdest thing about all that is that the first Star Wars trailer that I think was legitimately good was the one for Phantom Menace because it actually had a sense of focus to what it was trying to convey and relied less on action snippets than the trailers for its predecessors. Which is quite ironic considering that it had better action and a weaker story than those predecessors.

I'll grant that the trailer for the Force Awakens is better than the ones the original trilogy had, but I wish it had the focus of the Phantom Menace's trailer.

You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that this is going to be an unofficial remake of Episode IV with some obvious differences. I know that sounds crazy but think about it.

From we've seen so far through the trailers:

1. Kylo Ren gets show down and lands on a all but desolate planet like C3PO and R2 did.
2. Rey finds him and helps him like Luke Skywalker did with the driods.
3. They eventually meet Han and Chewbacca and escape the planet from the New Empire just like they did with Luke and Obi-Wan.
4. Kylo will fight against Supreme Leader Snoke is a lightsaber duel like Obi-Wan did with Darth Vader(I highly doubt it but I'm seriously going to laugh my ass off if Kylo ends up sacrifices himself to motivate Rey like Obi-Wan did to motivate Luke. That would just be insulting given the "diverse" cast they've been bragging about over the year).
5. And then we have a big climatic battle against the Death Star 3, just like in Episode IV.
6. Luke will basically be the new Obi-Wan.

Yeah... I think it's safe to say, "I have a very bad feeling about this."

Who knows? We'll see.
Seeing as Kylo Ren is the Sith (he's the one with the cross-guard lightsaber and black robes) I highly doubt he's going to be palling around with Jedi and Jedi-sympathizers or sacrificing himself for the good of anybody.

Painfully facepalms myself.

How the hell could I have fucked it up that badly?! That's what I get for not paying attention to this film. Well, I meant to say Finn but you get the idea.

I don't know man, I recall Luke spending 90% of A New Hope whining, first about being stuck on the ground, then about having to do chores, then about Obi Wan trying to get him not to do them, then about Han and his ship, some swashbuckling (Mostly running away) a cool grapnel swing, more whining, Obi Wan dies, Luke sulks, before finally standing up and being a real hero at the end and destroying the Death Star.

I really don't see how anything we've seen here is mopier, whinier, or more "emo". The only swashbuckler in A New Hope was Solo, and he spent a good deal of that yelling at people and running away. I don't see how these characters are somehow not going to be able to be heroic, or even that we've seen that much. Boyega's big debut in Attack the Block, was a whole load of heroism, and hacking up monsters with swords, he put in an amazing performance there, so I don't see why he can't do it here (And if you haven't seen Attack the Block, you should see it, because it's amazing).

Really, Luke only stops whining in the third film (He even bawls like a baby after losing his hand and learning that Vader is his father), at which point, he has in fact, become a legendary space wizard.

You and I remember Star Wars very differently.

Except it's pretty obvious he's not, as we already know what Kylo Ren looks like.

To be fair, Adam Driver and Mark Hamill are dead-on lookalikes. They're going to do the old switcheroo! You just know it!

Hmm, I don't know what it is about this picture but he just looks really odd. Like his head has been copy pasted on, or maybe it is the proportions...

Does the actor usually look like that, or is it just the way the picture is framed?

Anyone else?

Honestly it does look like his head is copy pasted on there to me

Yeah, but all that whining was him just wanting to get out and kick some arse, and when he finally does he's on it. And the kids full of adventure, a typical niave young lad full of beans just wanting to get amongst it. Especially when there's a shot at a pretty princess too!

Then when he's in the X-Wing at the end of New Hope he's thriving. Dishing out the orders and buzzing.

But all this aside it's like I say, just that initial "wow" factor. When all said and done I just look at the new gen and don't feel inspired by them.

Like I say, the film itself could prove me totally wrong, there's other elements of the film which I think look good and the previous trailer with Luke's voice as an overdub did get me a tad excited. I just hope that there's a lot, lot more to come from the new gen, and that we see a few more new gen characters in the following 2 movies, as I'm not warming to any of the current ones, whereas previously I only had to take 1 look at Han, Luke & Chewie in the original film to think "**** me they're so cool, I wanna be them!"
