New Tattoo and thoughts on Gaming Ink [PIC inside]

I want a gaming Tat. But I'm having a rotten time trying to decide... =/

Was thinking of getting the Kanto Badges from Pokemon somewhere... or the or maybe the Lambda Symbol...

You think you will still like Pokemon when you're 30? 40? 50? I highly doubt you will... I suggest you think about that before getting any kind of tattoo

On topic, I think tattoos should be either very meaningful or not meaningful at all, with no inbetween. The reason for this logic is because; if a tat is not meaningful at all it can just be "something that looks cool" or appeals to you aesthetically and so it's fairly likely you can be moderately happy with it all your life... and if it's very meaningful it has a message behind it that you believe in and that you can be happy with all you life.

A gaming tattoo falls in the middle ground, it has a little meaning: "this game was cool so I got a tat of it hurr hurr." but you really think you'll even remember Okami in 20 years? You think you will even be gaming in 20 years? Statistics show differently.

If it makes you happy that's all fine and stuff; some tattoos can look great. But I think you're going to regret a gaming tattoo.

I will eventually end up getting a gaming tattoo after my Biomech/Steampunk sleeve is done, but not rushing the idea at all. I grew up with mostly only video games and I want get something thats gonna resemble the amount of time I spent gaming to make it look as awesome as possible.

My quarrel isn't with the tattoo itself, but with what it will look like in 40 years or so. I have seriously thought about getting a Triforce tattoo, but I always think of what it might look like in the future, where I'd get it, and if it would impede on my career selection.

That said, I'm generally against the tattoos referenced to video games simply because of exactly what it may be trying to reference. I once saw a guy who had the Capcom logo and the first Max Payne box-art picture very faithfully recreated on his arm. Most people will look down on you for being a gamer anyway, you sure you wanna exacerbate it with a tattoo reinforcing your hobby/way of life?

Your Okami tattoo is pretty ambiguous, so you'd be safe in that regard. But be careful; I'm not sure how you feel about what others think of you, but try to retain that ambiguity if you want more game tattoos.

Of course current statistics show that older people don't game much, but they never grew up with them. Gaming is still incredibly young, it's still very much this generations thing. If you've grown up with games and they've played a big part in your life, why would you not still play them when your 50? Someone who grew up watching and loving films isn't going to stop watching them just because they're older, so why should it be different for games?

This misconception that games are only ever going to be played by young people is one of the things that makes everyone look down on it. I've been playing games for much of my life, and I love doing it. I know for a fact I'm still going to be playing them when I'm older. Probably not as much, but they'll still be there.

I don't really see any reason to have a tattoo unless you're part of a gang, organized crime or a tribe, but that's me.

I'm all for expressing myself, but my expressions will change as I grow older. So permanently marking it on my body would feel like I'm imprisoning myself to my past judgements.

This is a common criticism of any tattoo and I think it needs addressing. My common response to this is to simply say - how good do you think you're going to look in forty years time anyway? You're going to get old, wrinkly, fat and gassy - so you may as well have a few faded old tattoos as well. It's not going to make anything worse.

Unless you're George Clooney or Dr. Manhatten - we're all going to look like shit when we're in our sixties, tattoos or not.

I say if you like a tattoo idea, sit on it for a couple of months - not the design sheets, because they'll tear if you do that. But just put it in the back of your mind for a while. If after those couple of months (or a year, or whatever) you still feel like getting the tattoo, then get it.

I know a lot of people who hate the tattoos they got at eighteen, but they're still laughing at them now because they represnt the rashness and tempetous nature of their youth. You can still take a lesson away from a bad tattoo.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a gaming tattoo or not but I'm currently trying to design a sleeve for my left arm that incorporates some of my favourite D&D monsters. I can't draw for shit, but I have the design all mapped out in my head so I'll hopefully be ready to seriously frustrate a tattoo artist in the near future.

It's your body and you can do what you like with it. My personal opinion, not the best idea, makes you look a bit of a tool and makes you look like the biggest fanboy ever!

I have a full tribal sleeve, so you might say I look like a tool (or worse) and a stupid idea but were all different.

Interesting convo with your grandkids when you 60 though, "granddad, what's that?" "well, 60 odd years ago there was this games console and one of the games featured these characters, the game was called Okami" "...okay...". Just think you might regret this one.

If I may offer one piece of advice - Don't rush the idea.
My first gaming tatt was on the backburner for nearly a year before I went ahead with it. In the long run, I personally know I will not regret gaming tattoos. Games have been a part of my life for the majority of my existence, I also make sure that the characters or design hold intrinsic weight to me personally.

Lambda is a great idea in my opinion, Maybe try work it into something else so it's not just the symbol, but part of a larger design? It helps to have artistic friends that you can just toss around ideas to that they can sketch up, luckily I'm blessed with many of them

As someone who has been in the locker room of the Y, I am not really into tats. There is only so long before your cool dragon looks like a weird plate of spaghetti.

This kind of. I am all for Gaming Tats but remember there is something to be said about the elegance of simplicity. Not only is there less chance for the artist to fuck it up but the DMW or the Black Mesa lambda just have an awesomeness about them.

A lot of younger gamers put a bit emphasis on the gaming "lifestyle". Thing is it's not a lifestyle, they are just games. As people get older generally they get more hobbies and get out more, they also get jobs and a family, kids etc. Some don't and they are still consider themselves "hardcore gamers" with very few other interests (the same people who still live in a basement at 30 years old and in my honest opinion are very boring people) but they're a minority. Games have very little meaning behind them, it's just an ultimately pointless hobby, and although people may certainly play games as they get older and it's likely they will, I highly doubt there will many people not regretting getting gaming ink because it's not going to have the same impact on them as it used to.

Great design but you picked a bad spot to put it; it's going to warp and distort heavily with age and I know because I've got two celtic angels tattooed on my right pectoral (or boob, depending on whether I've bothered with the gym in months) that I've had for five years.

When I get my tattoo gun I'm going to tattoo the Crimson Omen from Gears on my right calf, but generally I'm not a huge fan of gaming ink for the same reason I don't like tattooing the names of women on me; opinions can change with time.

You're right, I don't fit in here much... not that it is any relevance to the conversation but I'm sort of fading out of posting here anyway, I just post when I'm bored and I come across a topic where I have something to say. Since I have very little in common with this community apart from the fact that we all like games, which of course is fine, but are you trying to say I should leave because I'm not the same as a lot of other people here? Sounds a lot like the kind of shunning that nerds always speak out against, except the shoe is on the other foot.. Kinda hypocritical, no? Diversity is the spice of life, dontcha-know.
