New to Skyrim: Oblivion Experience Needed?

It takes place over a century after the events of Oblivion. About the only thing you need to know about Oblivion is that Cyrodiil, just to the south of Skyrim, is the center of the empire.

Other than that, if you find the in-game book "The Oblivion Crisis" it summarizes all the events of Oblivion's main quest line pretty well. Also, the Mythic Dawn museum quest in Dawnstar touches on the events of Oblivion a bit.

Actually, the only real effect Oblivion had on my experience in Skyrim is that it colored my thoughts on the empire vs stormcloaks conflict. It's like, hey, I remember the empire in Oblivion and they seemed to run things pretty well over there so they're not so bad.

Yeah, but they chucked me into prison for just grabbing a cup in a tavern, not to mention that they seem to only talk in five voices, so death to the Imperials, stormcloaks for the win!
