Just play TF2 and see if you even want to play anything else.

Only buy one or two games in "steam sales" and play them untill you've completed them or are totally bored of them. Then buy one or two games again and repeat.

Do NOT make the same mistake we all made: bought immense amounts of games and ended up not playing them :) - Steam is very good in making you buy stuff you don't want/need/won't play.

The money you save from my advice, you can send to the "Steam Sales Helping Funds", to help people who have fallen victim under the heave weight of steam sales over the last couple of years.

If you're quick enough, you can get Torchlight II [http://store.steampowered.com/app/200710/] for $10. It's an amazingly good deal because the game is the creme-de-la-creme of the ARPG genre.

Also, I would follow the advice of other people and say wait for the Steam Summer Sale. There are bound to be tons of more games on sale than right now and you will definitely find something you want that will also be on sale.

Been playing Saint's Row 3 with a friend and that game is mad fun.
Killing Floor is great, especially if you have a group of friends to play it with.
Hotline Miami has banging music and is really good if not slightly frustrating.
Also recommend Limbo, Braid and Bastion.

Ill throw my hat in for Planetside 2.

Just make sure your system can take the strain of running it, and take your time to learn what everything is, and find a decent outfit to be part of, then you have greatness.

Other than that everything else i could think to say has already been mentioned.

Hello everyone, I just recently set up a steam account and am now witnessing a steam sale for the first time. I own next to no games, and have ~53$ left to spend on games from steam. The problem is, the games won't be on sale for a long time, and I don't know what to buy! I was hoping since a lot of people on escapist tend to be pc gamers who own steam that maybe you guys could give me a hand picking some games.

In general, I enjoy multiplayer games (I have 3 friends who also just got steam) and I personally enjoy fantasy and RPG games a lot. I'm willing to play just about every type though I am absolutely terrible at shooters (not to say I don't like them.) If anybody could suggest their favorite games or any particularly good deals, I'd be extremely thankful.
1. Save your money until sales. You will get a LOT more games than you will know.

2. Try out the many Free-to-play games on offer. TF2, DOTA2, Planetside 2, Spiral Knights, just about every major MMO that isn't WoW or the Old Republic. All of it is there for you, and you won't have to pay a penny to try them.

Whenever you look at a game on steam also check out the steam forums for that game, don't impulse buy because its on sale.. Some games turn out to be unplayable through lack of support for the latest windows, lack of patching or is just plain crap. I actually looked at War Z and was almost about to buy it before I checked the forums and found out about the debacle. Mount and blade warband is my number one recommendation as well.

Heh, I'd reccomend buying lots of the cheapest stuff you can find. I seem to remember reading a Penny Arcade comic where they discussed buying a premier game for $40 and forty games for $1 and arguing that the latter would be more fun overall.

No way. i'll have to refer you to these videos:

OT: I'd recommend looking at some good indie titles. Bastion, Cthulhu Saves the World and FTL: Faster Than Light should get you started. Then move on to some of the AA or AAA games released about >1 years ago, as they will have gotten pretty cheap by now.

Steam is a digital shopfront for the PC, first and foremost. Secondly, it is a DRM system. Thirdly and finally, it is a content management system. The real question here is which games benefit from the content management features, and are best on PC. Some content management features are great (cloud saves), some are ok (friend lists, but consoles have these too), some are atrocious (forced updates) and some are plain meaningless (achievements).

I'd go out of my way to purchase the following on Steam:
+ Any first-party (Valve Solftware) games.
+ Games that use Steam's cloud save service.
+ Multiplatform games that are best on PC (mods, mouse input, simply a better version) that don't fit in the negative categories below.
+ Multiplayer games that are PC specific or best on PC.

I'd intentionally avoid the following games on Steam:
- Modern AAA titles that are known to be update heavy. Steam will force updates on you, even if you are playing another game at the time. This creates huge performance dips to whatever you are playing at the time. The best prevention is to avoid purchasing/installing "needy" games.
- Games that require second-layer DRM. The Steam shop has a fine print referring to "third party digital rights management" on these titles. Again, horrible hit to performance. Avoid, avoid, avoid. If Games for Windows Live is mentioned, purchase on console only.
- Games that are best with a gamepad, if you have a console. Its just easier.

The main benefits of Steam are the cloud save, some multiplayer features (friends lists). The other benefits are the price and ability to redownload, but these are shared with rival digital shopfronts such as Good Old Games (GoG). I'd typically go Steam over a boxed copy of a PC title any day, but if the price is equal, I'd choose GoG for titles that don't benefit from Steam's extra features for performance reasons.

I'm unable to watch videos. Can you sum it up briefly?

Is it that a quality experience, such as the sadness porn that is The Walking Dead (love that game), is far greater than a clutch of mediocre experiences?

The video was regarding Steam Sale's tendency to cause players to buy stuff they don't really want or need, simply out of impulse. The video in question was regarding "Bad Rats: The Rat's Revenge", one of the world's many "Worst game evaaar!"s.

That is a good point. Steam has transformed me into an slavering consumer, incapable of rational thought. I even bought Divinity 2 and that is a terrible game. That is even after I'd purchased Beyond Divinity which was so bad I needed counseling.

Divine Divinity was so good though!
