I don't think aircraft would play a large part in it, as they didn't in the actual war. However, you could implement them as a sort of 'agent' like in empire, to reveal the map so you can see what the enemy are moving around, and if you're close enough, the exact numbers. Cavalry could be an early game line breaker, that is obsoleted by machine guns and replaced technologically by tanks. Artillery could have an alternate ammunition in the form of gas shells, which would be useful in breaking enemy morale, and trenches could serve as a garrisonable defense. The possibilities are actually quite staggering, come to think of it.
That's the beauty of the time period. At first, you think it's just lame wait in trenches for things to happen, but with the amount of things that can happen, and it's all you that does it,it quickly becomes a large and varied game.
But when I said planes,I really meant primitive things, like dropping grenades at first, but near the end of the war, using real, yet rather small bombs.I will have to research the subject further.

As for agents, other than the recon plane,I'm not sure what could be used.Diplomats?Spies?
Considering the way WW1 started I'd say that assassins are still very valid.

spies and terrorists could be interesting. Like with the rakes in Empire, you could send your agent in to kill generals, sabotage a munitions factory and so on so forth. Research would be another element, so scientists would be needed to enact this aspect. Since religion would no longer be a deciding factor, diplomats could fill the gap of indirect influence that missionaries used to fill. A diplomatic mission to a tense area could avert unwanted conflict, or if unsuccessful speed things along.

Why is everyone saying Rome 2? Just download Rome Total Realism or Europa Barborum. No need for a second one.

OT: Three kingdoms would be awesome. Barring that, maybe the warring states period.
I'm not a big RTS fan so I like EU3 better than E:TW.
The same goes for most of the mods Paradox interactive spout and call 'games'.

How about Greece or Egypt?
Greece would be cool, especially a Peloponnese one.

I don't think Egypt would work as well for Total War, it rarely went beyond the nile (Barring its very brief expansion into Palestine) Most of the time it was some other empire's *****. And the new kingdom unification would just be Shogun II with more sand

How about Assyria:Total War? Pick a Mesopotamian city-state, and conquer the "world" as far as you can see it
