If you're willing to go for a DS i'd reccomend Advance Wars: Dual Strike, followed by Dark Conflict.

Or for PC Rise of Nations, the gold edition is pretty cheap, and the campaigns are good.

(Disclaimer, I work for the developer of RoN)

However, my desire to work here was fueled entirely by that, the greatest RTS ever made, or at least my favorite. I know you asked about turn based ones, but you won't be disappointed by it.

Any of the Advance Wars series are well balanced, tactical and most importantly extremely fun. I recommend you buy a DS so you can get all versions and link up with other players. I played a game of Advance Wars: Dual Strike with a mate last month and it lasted 3 days!! Amazing!

Heh, Mega post revival, well spotted

I did like the demo of civilization revolution, possibly because I was too young and stupid to understand the previous civilization releases.

My other suggestion would be to save up for advance wars, its one of the best TBS that I have ever played.

How has nobody mentioned X-COM UFO Defense? and if you have i didnt see it.
Probably the greatest turn based tactics game there is. Abandonia gives it out for free since its abandonware nowadays

Heroes 3 is really good too as others have mentioned, it doesnt feel as gimmicky as 5 somehow.

If you're into the old stuff you can try Colonization.

Give some of the NIS games a try, especially Makai Kingdom, if you can find it. Tactically it's the most interesting of the NIS games but it really lacks story and a reason to continue playing.

Civilization 4
Medieval 2: Total War

Both games will draw you in, well, as Yahtzee puts it, "like a triple-cunted hooker"

If you're into hex-based strategy games, Shattered Union by 2K for the PC is an oldie but goodie; the maps are frighteningly accurate, and the storyline isn't too bad. You might be able to find it in a bargain bin, or on a digital download site, for around $10.

Master of Magic. Seriously old school. You'll need DosBox to play it.
F!ing addicting though.
For a slightly more up to date version of mostly the same game, Age of Wonders (one or two) are pretty great IMO.
Galactic Civ is great and really cheap too.
Warlords is pretty awesome. I have also been having fun with Battle for Middle Earth II destroying the Hobitses..
To be honest though. I have played almost every new RTS and TBS that comes out and Master of Magic can still kill my free time like no other.

PC: Any game in the Total War series. Medieval: Total War is my favourite, but the graphics are fairly primitive and it sometimes doesn't work well with new Pc's. Rome: Total War and Medieval Total War 2 are both good. Galactic Civilizations 2 is also excellent, but the combat is quite dry.

360: Mass Effect is a good RPG, but I can't think of any strategy games for the 360.

DS or GBA: If your willing to pick up a DS, the Advance Wars series is great and most of the games are cheap now. The Fire Emblem games for GBA are fun too. The Ds has a bunch of good turn-based strategy, since that genre fits it so perfectly.

There was this awesome game out ages ago, called something Red, or Red something, maybe Red wasn't in it actually. But anyway, WW2 had continued for another 50 years, and Japan had split into 2 and developed giant Robots to fight (naturally). You got to control a squad or so on a turn based map, then when you got into fighting you had to manually control the mech and aim its artillery shots, whilst also ordering its support troops. It was good!

PS2 though. Rofl.

You might want to take a look at GUNROX - www.gunrox.com
It's kinda like X-com or Jagged Alliance but totally online multiplayer. Plus it's free.
