I dunno, Gormourn... just looking at the terrible things that have happened throughout history, I wouldn't have any trouble believing God's a giant asshole. But eh.
Same here, it would still come as a shock that God would show any proof of existense but I would also find it painful that some giant bastard has done nothing over all these years!

I personally wouldn't care either way. I've been called an atheist and an agnostic; whatever I actually am, I don't care. If a God exists, cool beans. If there is no God, oh well.

Well it's been said before, but I'm agnostic, so I wont be too shocked no matter the result. It would be kind of depressing knowing that our consciousness just disappears after we die...but it would be even more depressing if God ended up being like all major religions make him out to be. I think I'd rather hang out in Hell. Though according to most religions, it's where I'm going to anyway. :p

I'd get my ass to a confession booth as fast as possible to make sure I don't fry for all eternity, lucky for me tho I stopped believing in fairy tales when I was a kid.

*sigh* people can be so ignorant... ok reality check. which story sounds weirder that we came from an all powerful God or we were made from dust -_- u tell me. And Proof that he is here is all around you. All of these complex things could not have been made by dust or else we would have mini civilizations everywhere. I know its hard to beleive in something you cant see. You just have to look at the facts and accept.

Way the go on acting like the common bible thumper and totally missing the point of this thread. The OP asked how you would react if you found out that God didn't exist(if you believe in him), or how you would react if you found out he does(if you don't believe). No one asked for your preaching. You're just bringing in conflict where people asked to not have one. So way the go on making religion look better, I guess.

I was raised Catholic and blindly toed the party line until I was 20 and actually started to see valid arguments against Catholicism.

So it was kind of a nasty shock, which I tried to fight off and ended up not staying Catholic...still Christian, but not Catholic. Right now I just have to deal with my mom (who is convinced that I'm going to hell and keeps sending me articles about "how the Catholic church LOVES to take back 'fallen-away Catholics'"), and a bigoted priest who fired me from my music director job because he thought I was going to force the choir to "go Protestant."

EDIT: post #500, woot.

You're doing exactly what the OP asked people not to do. The question isn't whether or not God exists, the question is how would you react if it turned out your beliefs were suddenly unquestionably disproven.

I actually used to be an adamant Fundamentalist Christian. I hated gays, Catholics(I was Protestant), and sexually-frustrated as much as my fellows(though some were surprsingly more racist than I was) until about three years ago when I was faced with a situation all of my faith could not handle.

Basically, living the "Authentic Christian Lifestyle" did not store up enough good karma with God to help me when I needed it most desperately. Thus began a process of a slow unravelling of things until I reach the place I am at now.

Now, I would call myself a "Secularist". Basically, I think that the old traditions should be read but with a nod towards modern understanding and an appreciation of new knowledge that does separate us from our biblical ancestors.

My major issue with my old faith is that far too much importance is placed on simply having "faith", enough to the point where blatant discrimination can occur and no one bats an eye at it. The church has been opposed to rights to minorities, women, and now homosexuals enter the spotlight and it is history repeating itself once again. I shudder to imagine who the next group of unlucky bastards will be.

In nearly any other setting under any other pretext what "believers" do and say would be considered literally and figuratively insane. However, cognitive dissonance and group dynamics can truly perform miracles.

Further while I admire some of the new Atheists for their attempts at revving up some much needed discussion, I think that ultimately the best we can do is try to reach across the aisle whenever possible and call out as best we can the rest.

I know I would have never gotten "un-Saved" had I not had something so catastrophic happen it literally sent me into a breakdown. Something you absorb so deeply into yourself cannot just be pried out like an errant piece of dinner left in a crevice behind a tooth.
However I also believe that letting the bullshit just sit and ignoring it is running into a wall too since the bullshit is starting to vote and take office. It is starting to actually GET legislation passed(Prop 8 to my fellow Ahmuricuns).

I think it is a matter of wrangling the bullshit and calling it out, but ther eis a line between those options and outright attack. Every "Religionist" we may successfully beat-down in discussion we must also admit is a human being. Do we really think that kind is going to get them to at least cool their jets? Or simply polarize them more against even the most gentle plea?

So who knows.
