After years of sticking to my sony products I've decided to branch out. I picked up a 360 today along with Tales of Vesperia, as it's been taunting me for a few years now, and was wondering if I could get some suggestions on some good games out there, and I'm not talking in store retail titles.

I was glancing through the arcade and was drowning in things to try. The trial option for games is awesome, and I'm wondering what games are must haves.

Now, I'm sure I'll get a lot of shooter suggestions, but that won't help me at all. To give an idea of the type of games I play, there's JRPGs, western RPGs like dragon age... mass effect, la noire, final fantasy, the persona/shin megami tensei games, portal, assassin's creed, uncharted, just to name things I've been playing recently.

I need games that have great stories and preferably aren't terribly short.
I already know some retail games I'm going to be getting/trying including Alan Wake, Magna Carta 2, the fable games, and I want to try lost odyssey, infinite undiscovery, and the last remnant. I've heard good and bad things about all those titles but I always like to form my own opinions.

So folks, send me your suggestions, and if anyone wants to add me as a friend on xbox you're welcome to do so :)

Exclusives are getting rarer these days (which makes me happy),

Here's a few good 360 exclusives:

Crackdown (yeah it's shooter-ish but it's platform-ey too)
Splinter Cell: Conviction

If you like RPGs try Fable 2, but a lot of people hated it so maybe get it second had or rent it first.

XD Oh dear, hostile. I have nothing against Halo, I'm just not a shooter-gal. Unless it's mass effect. Then sign me up baby.

Here's a hint....The longer a series goes on regarding xbox exclusiveness, as a rule of thumb it proportionally gets worse (Only exception : Halo Reach) so buy one of the early titles.

I could reccomned Dead Rising two, just mindless zombie slaying fun, more of a rental game IMO though, I got bored after 2 weeks.

Any arcade titles you would recommend that I've been missing? :)
Torchlight if you haven't played it already.

Lost odyssey is a great choice. It has a good story and gameplay is fun. It also has great voice acting, which is rare for Jrpgs.

Which one of these Xbox games can you play on the 360 ?

KOTOR 1 or 2, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Operation Flashpoint: Elite, Call of Cithulu, Condemned: Criminal Origins ?
You can play Morrowind vanilla, goty doesn't play though. Jade empire also works. Sorry but those are the only ones I know work for sure.

wikipedia has a list of xbox games that will play on 360. Check that out.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Castle Crashers, two beat em' ups with RPG elements. They're light on the story, but I think they're the most fun things on the arcade. Limbo is good too, kind of a platformer/puzzle game but its extreeeeeemely atmospheric and moody, try out the demo (you'll know if its up your alley or not within about 2 minutes). Also try out Double Fine's Costume Quest, a turn-based RPG that's about a brother-sister duo who fight monsters in their halloween costumes with other kids in the neighborhood. Adorable yet fun.

For the indie games side, I suggest Cthulhu Saves the World, an old-school RPG (8-bit graphics and all) with some updated mechanics and a very amusing story, assuming you don't take Lovecraft as unalterable gospel.

Phew. That's all I got for the moment, arcade/indie wise.

I have a pretty good PC, my Xbox 360, and a Playstation 3 only recently. I mention that because as it turns out the controller really can make all the difference. The Xbox 360 has a far superior controller for games that involve driving and shooting, but for games that rely on the D-pad the Sony controller works best. Also, consider that on some systems the games produced look better and are less problematic. Portal and Bayonetta are examples of better execution on a console.

As for things like stories, well, that's going to be subjective. I frankly hated Vesperia, thought it was the among the dumbest games I've ever played (and I've been doing this since the Atari 2600 was hot stuff). On the other hand I thought Mass Effect told a terrific story that drew me in with the same giddy glee I'd felt as a child watching Star Wars. Bioshock struck me as brilliant, and not just for it's big twists, but because the atmosphere, the ambient activity and the surrounding underwater cityscape was so engrossing I simply couldn't have imagined the impact the game would have on me as I played it.

Tastes will differ. I get the feeling you enjoy JRPGs, so I can't help you there since the last good one I'd played was Dragon Quest 8, and to be honest even then it couldn't hold a candle to Chrono Cross.

Sorry if my input isn't all that fruitful. Good luck to ya, bub.

Limbo is definitely one I'm going to try out... I've liked the look of it since I first saw it. I'm familiar with some of the ones you mentioned since they're on the PS3 too but they're all excellent suggestions regardless, thank you! :)

I dunno what all you have and haven't played so I'm laying down everything.

-Fallout 3, maybe New Vegas if you want.
-Anything Elder Scrolls. Morrowind was also great.
-As you mentioned, Fable is a good one to try out.
-I also suggest Two Worlds II. Much better than the first.
-Saints Row is also great in my opinion. It's similar to GTA, but less serious. If you saw the Saints Row: The Third virtual tour that was posted, then you'll understand.
-Dead Rising 2 is a great zombie game to pass the time with.

That's all that really come to mind at the moment. I'd imagine you've played some of what I suggested.

EDIT:

Oh, and a tip. If you ever are tempted by an FPS or similar Live situation.. Don't talk to the locals!

If you're looking for specifically exclusive X360 games, I'll post ones from the list on Wikipedia that I've played and enjoyed, and try not to post shooters :p

Alan Wake
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Very fun if you are imaginative as well, although you can still enjoy it if you're not)
Crackdown (Sort of a shooter I suppose)
Dead Rising
Forza Motorsport 2 or 3 (Probably 4 as well when it comes out)
Halo Wars
Lost Odyssey
Metro 2033

Admittedly Forza doesn't have a story per se but it can last you a hell of a long time

Also in terms of XBLA games, Doritos Crash Course and Harms Way are two rather fun, if short, freebies

Fallout 3, or Fallout New Vegas are both really good games. :) I used to only play JRPG's (on my ps2 as well <3), and I've expanded my horizons a lot since. The game controls are like a fps but it's totally an RPG, i love it. (You can chose melee, unarmed or guns so you aren't forced to shoot stuff to kill it.) There are so many options for how you can play your character and I found the transition from the games I used to play to this very smooth.
