Most of us don't have evil dark lives from hell, so playing a game where everything is sad and evil IS an escape. Allow me to pose a real-life escapist situation:

You are a kid, playing with your friends
Anyway, something happens (in your imaginary game) and one of you dies (ding!)
Back when I was a kid, EVERYONE wanted to be the person that died.
Wait, what? I can't remember anyone wanting to die back when I was a kid..

I'm not fully opposed to mature and dark games, but I just don't see why every game should be dark and mature.
Maybe it's just me, I just far prefer a dark tone (did I phrase that right?)

Why is "mature" conflated with "well-made?" I thought people liked Katamari Damacy...

I don't doubt it will be up to Ocarina of Time standards, storywise (and if it's up to Majora's Mask level, I'll be ecstatic). But then, I'm easy to please. I'm willing to accept some gameplay deficiencies for sake of story, but since I've spent the last two weeks playing God Hand, I'm also clearly willing to put up with story deficiencies for the sake of great gameplay.

The only real difference is that LoZ carries more nostalgic value, so people will judge its story more harshly, regardless. I'm perfectly unashamed of looking forward to what I'm hoping will be absolutely awesome toys.
oh I love katamari damacy. also love pikmin and the original pokemon games and all sorts of other immature sort of games. I own animaniacs and tiny toons and such like that as well.

the point, though, is that the Legend of Zelda franchise is a mature franchise. it's meant to be dark and gritty and full of conflict. it's never been kiddy until wind waker and the portable versions based on that. zelda is a series about on level with things like lord of the rings and should be treated as such. mario is where the kids should be going. you wouldn't want to see a toony samus aran fighting off evil bunnies, would you?

Here's two more links, filled with, basically, redundancy at this point.

This is a link (no pun intended) to the What They Play article.
http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2009/06/04/shigeru-miyamoto-talks-a-little-about-new-zelda-ga/

This is a link to a "Wii news" article, also mentioned (and linked to) by What They Play.

My major hope is that Nintendo doesn't loose their nerve again and change the game to make it more like Ocarine of Time, because if anyone remembers the early trailers for Twilight Princess, it looked like it would be so much darker (not that dark is always good, but compared to the majority of the series, it would at least be different), what with the fact that it looked as if he was going to be fighting a war, and the crazy Gohma chase, and so one, and so forth.

I wanted that game so bad, and still do (despite loving TP as it is), and I kinds hope that it was mostly done, that way, one day, probably on the system after this, they can release a "Twilight Princess Master Quest," like they did with Ocarina, and we can play what TP was supposed to be.

One can only hope, both for that and that Nintendo will trust us enough not to do it again to the new Zelda.

A new Zelda game? Somehow I thought that they might make another one, but it was just a hunch. [/sarcasm]
As for all the people who are arguing over what Zelda games have been good and which have been bad, just be glad that Zelda has actually survived as a series for this long. There's a laundry list of game series that became garbage after one or two sequels. *waves the banner of Hyrule*

...I'll grant that I've played few of the Zelda games (to date, the original, Adventure of Link, a little bit of Link to the Past, OoT, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker). While they're all filled with conflict, the only one I would describe as "dark" would be Majora's Mask, and none of them were "gritty." I was under the assumption that that's what made Twilight Princess so special.

Also, while I probably have to concede that Wind Waker is "kiddy," it's not immature in the least. Did the cel shading really fool people into ignoring the story (especially Ganondorf)?

ok, "kiddy" isn't the best word to use, perhaps. maybe "light hearted" instead would work better.

and ocarina of time was pretty darn dark. there's always humor in a nintendo game, it's what gives their stuff so much charm, but zelda's still no less dark for that. it's a very serious franchise that tailors itsself to a significantly more mature audience. I would market metroid to kids well before I did so with the mainstream zelda titles (the hand held versions are definitely going a lighter route these days). I mean, even the trailer videos and poster shots of zelda games tend towards a darker side.

this isn't to say it's a horror game where everyone curses and gets mutilated or anything, and I doubt we'll EVER see a nintendo game where you just can't let kids play, but Zelda is still decidedly dark despite this. Maybe not Eternal Darkness dark, but still dark.

Oh man, that image just screams awesome. Nice to see that we're not going to be stuck with a cartoony Link for the rest of the series. Now I really can't wait for 2010.
