After a 108 year dry spell the Chicago Cubs came away with the Big One!

Here's another article!

While I haven't paid attention to Major League baseball since the Atlanta Braves dominated the game in the 90's I actually started paying attention today because...reasons.

In any case the 7th game of the series came to a tie in the 9th inning: 6 runs to each team.

Then it started raining and the tarps came out. Heavier rain was expected. WOULD THEY HAVE TO POSTPONE????

The tenth inning started and the Cubs racked up two more runs and managed to shut down the Cleveland Indians in the bottom of the 10th.

Congratulations, Cubs!!! You earned it!!!

Boooo!

I wanted the jokes about the Curse of the Billy Goat to continue.

Such a waste of a sports curse.

I have been seeing reference to the Cubs EVERYWHERE.

Why is this such a monumentis event?

Is this the first time the Cubs won the World Series?

They last won it in 1908, 108 years ago.

The first time in more than a century; the longest gap in Major League Baseball history. Further, the Cubs are a major Chicago institution; I've heard cries of "this year is the year!" (followed by "maybe next year!" when they'd inevitably blow it) for as long as I've been alive. Chicago has two baseball teams; the White Sox, after a long gap of their own, won the series in 2005, but owing to the longstanding rivalries between the city's north and south sides, this just made the Cubs fans angrier. Well, more determined, anyway- the loyalty they exhibit is nothing short of astonishing. I've lived my whole life as a suburbanite, but many family members lived (and live) in the city itself; that may have colored my view on the subject, but basically every Cubs game for as long as I can recall was sold out, or at least nearly so, so it's not just my imagination.

Given how few members of the team are actually from Chicago's north side (as is true of pretty much any big-league team, at least in this country), and the fact that I don't give a damn about sports, I find the whole thing totally inexplicable. But it's a reason to celebrate, so I say let 'em take it.

My Lit professor should be happy about that, though. He's been talking them up the past few weeks.
