It is great they caught him and all but how did they know to check his files and such?

Purely speculation, but I know that as a person in the medical field if I look up a patient's info that I have no connection to (not testing/treating etc) it gets flagged. I would hazard a guess the police system might have something like that. I mean hell, it sounds like the guy was making massive searches, which would've probably thrown up a bunch of flag just on that alone.
