Its seems console games in the end are broken down into to catergories, "next-Gen" and "pre-gen". Howver the 360 has been out for 2 years, the Wii just over one year and the PS3 has been out for a round 10 months. So why does everyone continue to call them "next-gen consoles"?

I would think that seeing as how we hare well into this generation shouldn't next-gen be the xbox 720, The Nintendo Puu and PS4 instead of 2 year old technology (360) being considered future technology?

Marketing. Next-gen sounds better. Just like how you used to hear "Space Age technology" all the time.

People like to label things. Nextgen is a buzzword that's stuck around, and like all buzzwords it will disappear over time. When will that be? My guess is that it will happen when PC games start looking consistently better than consoles, or people start using another term to describe standard market consoles.

I thought the buzzword would have dissapeared by now.
Until Pre gen ceases to exist, as in noone buys xbox or ps2 games anymore, then we can move on. Apparently they still sell to poor people who can't affored to fork out that little bit extra to go 'next gen'. So until that happens... it's here to stay.

Although the Xbox 360 has been out two years and the PS3 10 months, You can still call both of them next-gen, since the 360 can manage games equally advanced that can be played on the PS3, however, the Wii can't, so maybe we should call the Wii a pre-gen console? When you think about it the Wii is just a small white Gamecube with a fancy motion-sensetive controller.

Wii is still a generation AFTER the gamecube. Until we can introduce another generation of consoles, I suppose the name will stick.

PC can handle games none of the consoles can, so is that 'next-gen'? Nope! Next-gen is just a marketing buzz word that the sales people use to try and make you think that you're getting a badass futuristic gizmo that can launch the space shuttle, play games and give you a very nice massage. Or something along those lines...maybe without the massage ;)

Did Mass Effect come out on the PC? Yeah, that's pretty cool. Hey, do you think Halo 3 will come out on the PC too? Actually, scrap that last part. That didn't help my arguement.
