As an old fogey game player, I remember logging hundreds of hours on my favorite 8 bit games. I was wondering which new games you folks think have lasting replay value and why. Just one ground rule: don't just say "because there are a lot of achievements" - say why the achievements are worth doing.

My vote goes for the Orange Box. The HL2's was so dense with ideas that I went back several times to redo my favorite parts, and Team Fortress 2 is really well balanced.

Indigo Prophecy.

It's a such a different and interesting game, I had fun trying to find all the alternate endings.

I was talking with my friends earlier about whether or not online play counts as replay value. Personally I don't think playing online should be counted as "replaying", you should have to play the campaign or main story again.

Mirror's Edge.

I just like doing things and then doing them a bit faster next time. Plus it becomes more fun as you get better at it.

Anyone who says "you can finish the game in an afternoon" is clearly missing the point, by a wide margin.
This.

Also, not strictly a full replay, but I played the ending of Prince of Persia several times over, just to make sure what I was seeing was actually fucking happening.

Mass Effect, just so much content it's nuts, and doing things differently on different play-throughs is great.

It's tough to say for me. I usually replay a game when a nagging idea in the back of my head tells me that an old game would be great to play again. As such, I'm not sure yet which will cause that nagging irritation. POP might call to me again, especially if there will be a POP II, or Fallout 3.

Twilight Princess. the games so engrossing, well thought out character, the levels are great, bosses a little disappointing but sill fun and one of those games you can complete then start again straight away, or was that just me?

Personally, I think the game with the most replay value I've ever played is Hitman: Bloodmoney.
But then yus, Fallout 3 you can lose days in. For online, Gears of War is still the best for me.
But saying that lately I haven't been able to put down Saints Row 2.

The reason that contemporary games lack replay value is because they are built on easier game-play to drive a linear story forward comfortably. I call bullshit on the replay value of games like Indigo prophecy, Mirror's Edge, and Twilight Princess. Realistically, how many times are you replaying them compared to replaying Pacman or Gallaga?

For me, I would say geometry Wars offers that replay value because of it's progressive difficulty as you improve and classic game mechanic based concept.

Well it really depends if you want to be immersed in a game.

Fable 2 is a great example, sure you can just go thru the storyline but thats no fun. I wandered for hours finding hidden treasure and doing random things. Like getting 10 hookers to follow you to a house, break in and have some fun, then slaughter them like lambs. Weres that in the campaign?

Achievements when done right let your explore something that you wouldnt do otherwise. Like becoming a Bigamist in Fable or going thru a level in L4D using only pistols. But done wrong like kill 10 trillion enemies and then you got a gamerscore a couple of points shorter than it should be.

Forget about replaying these games, I'm excited about getting a new PC so I can PLAY Mass Effect, Oblivion, Left 4 Dead, etc.

I have a Wii though, and I have noticed a trend of not wanting to revisit games...except Metroid Prime 3 of course.

Just to touch on the achievements, the achievements I think was pretty ingenious....granted some people take them a little too seriously, and in some cases are a good way to see who never gets out of the house...but overall it was pretty smart. Helps extend play on a game.

Why? Because, you beat a game, you think you're the you-know-what, and you're done with it. Well not so fast, because now there are achievements, i.e. Challenges....that basically say, Oh yeah? Think you're so good and done with this game? Well try to do 3 of (these) on (this level) in (this amount of time) if you think you're so good.....Game on!

The 1st Wii game we have gotten that actually has replay value (other than Wii Fit) is Hasbro Family Games i think it's called, with Yahtzee, Battleship, Connect Four, etc.....replay because it's really a fun way to play these games, which the old original format (actual dice or board) of them had replay value, so does the Wii version.....

this, I have been able to replay every zelda game, except majoras mask, at least 3 times over each. Considering I logged 80 hours into TP, that means I will get a good 240 hours of gameplay out of it, which makes me feel as though I should go outside right now and do something...

Indigo Prophecy was last gen - you mean Heavy Rain.
Sorry about that, I was thinking about games I really liked with great replay value I forgot that the OP requested current gen.

Heavy Rain does look and sound kick ass.

The older I get the less time I have to devote to replaying a game. I'd rather try new and interesting things than redo something.

definately dead space and fallout 3 ATM
dead space reminds me of endless playthroughs of RE4,
and shitting myself as a kid watching the thing.....
