Hank Pym deserves a chance in the spotlight as Ant-man.
I'd love an Ant-man movie, The Avengers just doesn't seem right without him.
However I think he's a little dark for the Marvel movie universe; he beats his wife, is insecure, a complete dick. As if that weren't enough to stop it from being made, Janet is a mutant, and Marvel can't use anything mutant related because Fox owns the rights.
So they'd have to either destroy his character to get the movie made, or just not make it.
Personally I've been hoping for Black Panther for years. I can't believe they rebooted Hulk and made a fucking Thor movie before Black Panther.
You seem to be much more familiar with Ultimate Ant-man then regular continuity Ant-man.
Regular continuity Ant-man definitely has some mental issues, most likely some kind of bipolar disorder. but he only hit his wife once as far as I'm aware, and his wife isn't a mutant.
His abuse of Janet isn't common in 616 the way it is in Ultimate, but it was still a huge story line for his character; ignoring it would be like ignoring Tony Stark's Demon in a Bottle >_> ...
As for Wasp not being mutant, I'm not sure if the law would make that distinction as she is a mutant in one continuity. AFAIK anything with any sort of association with mutants can't be touched by Marvel Studios (and yes, I only know this as a result of watching The Big Picture, so I could be terribly wrong). Edit: Obviously I'm wrong here, or Marvel is willing to risk it/pay Fox
His Ultimate incarnation is incredibly close with his 616 version, just a little better fleshed out if you ask me (odd considering a significantly shorter run). Janet being a mutant made for a great basis for his many of his insecurities and so forth. Though I don't mean to change this to what version I prefer (obvious answer).
No matter how you look at it, he's a darker Marvel character; that is to say his storylines are heavily driven by what is very real drama for a lot of people. I just can't imagine him being material for a Summer action blockbuster. I think a movie treatment could make him seem like the poor man's Tony Stark.
EDIT: I had recalled seeing info ages ago about Edgar Wright doing an Ant-man movie. After a quick search, it still seems like it may happen; after going silent for some time Marvel and Wright are talking about it again. It's listed on IMDB and he just finished a test reel for it. It would be for Marvel Studios and not Fox or someone else, so take that how you will.
There's little info on it floating around; at one point Wright said both Pym and Lang would be in it. So it's possible that Pym might be largely ignored and Lang would end up being the title character -- of course that's just speculation.
Who knows if it'll actually happen.
