If we're talking trench warfare, then i'd agree. The Bayonet was still used then if I remember correctly, gurkha forces with the British reportedly snuck behind enemy lines and slit the necks of germans in foxholes (although they'd leave the buddy sleeping to scare them).
I'm sure there were enough different units in that time period fighting to have a decent time with it.
It'd require a whole new mechanic, one in wich you use loads of artillery and try to lose less soldiers then the enemy in attacks on eachothers trenches.
