I'm going to assume the next xbox won't have blu-ray. It would be lovely if it did, but it probably won't. DVDs are already too small for many games. They're even trying to squeeze out a last drop of life with the incoming May firmware update that gives a 15 percent-ish boost to disc space for their games.

If not blu, What are they planning on doing? Maybe trying to make their own new format just for the new console? Staying with DVDs even? Thoughts?

floppy disks! games come in a one-tonne crate of accumulated floppies, which you then plug in :)

more seriously, I think there's likely to be a shift towards downloadable and streamed gaming - if they went this way it would likely come with a very large hard drive (or have a rather expensive one sold separately).

either that or games come on DRM protected memory sticks or somthing - that would probably cut down on shipping and manufacture.

Actually Sony is just a big backer, and they only own the logo. The current board of directors is as follows:

Apple
Dell
HP
Hitachi
LG
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic
Pioneer
Philips
Samsung
Sharp
Sony
Sun Microsystems
TDK
Thomson
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney

An ion cannon satellite uplink so you can burn non believers.

To be honest its a good question i think they are going to have to go blue-ray or digital. As unless there is a huge jump in techology before they bring out the new console i can not see them really having any other options

Do what PCs do, use the hard-drive (or another type of mass storage device).

I admit it has it flaws like making pirating easer and likely increase the vigorousness of the DRM but it's an another solution to the problem without using Blu-Ray. It is gives better performance and increases the efficiency

It'll have bluray. Neither MS nor Sony are run by the average internet fanboy (We hope.) BD is the new format of choice, and pretty much everyone involved would rather eat their own leg than try to force yet another format war any time soon.

Unless MS is silly enough to just give up on physical copies of movies altogether.

i would think pink ray maybe

but i would think they will make their own format to compete with ps3 and maybe win this time with the whole psn issue.

I would love to see cartridges return, with the ssd tech at the moment cartridges would totally out preform bluray and no more scratched disks :)

Am I right in saying Toshiba made HD-DVD? Yeah it's dead anyway, Blu-Ray won the war. It's more than likely gonna be in the next console.

Either way they'd lose non-digital HD movies. Add in that bluray is cheaper and carries more storage than anything else at the moment. For the record, MS used dvd & Sony is a part of the consortium that owns it too.

flash based memory cartridges. Kinda like the handhelds do it, now for the big consoles. It'll even allow you to store your savegames and DLC on the cartridge as well.
And since it's a console, they can put in the most demonic and obscure DRM, as long as it's offline enabled and out of the player's eye, noone will care (I'm looking at demonic versions of securom)

They're a backer in the consortium behind it. They're also in the same position with DVD's, and Microsoft uses that... :p
