They are going to go entirely downloadable. They probably won't have a disc tray at all, and it they do it will mostly be for old xbox games and DVDs rather than actual, new games.

There will be much more emphasis on xbl -- the wireless connector will come INSIDE the xbox, and it will be near impossible to play without access to the internet (possible a DRM nightmare).

All games will be downloadable straight from XBL which will allow M$ to take a large chunk of the publishers' market share (which will cause a lot of bad blood between the M$ and EA+Activision and the other major publishers).

oh, and Kinect will be built into it.

Flash + today's development costs = $90-$120+ games. A dual layered bd costs about $3 @ 50gb'ish for $60 games. So tack on another $30-$60 depending on how big the game is. Good luck with that. (Don't forget deterioration, dust, failure rates, and all the other wonderful problems the industry was relieved to be rid of with the coming of cdrom.)

Again, not really seeing where people are getting that MS can't/wont use BD cause of Sony.

Digital isn't going to happen any time soon, if ever. The majority of the US still lacks broadband, to say nothing of the rest of the world outside of Western Europe & bits of Asia.

* And why would Sony group want to prevent MS from using bluray? That's just silly. They'll make their share of money off both the licensing & all the blurays folks buy. Just the same as dvd.
lets be serious here, the majority of the US DOES have broadband and has since about 2006

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL..

Aah, that made me lol. It worked out for them so well last time, didn't it?

I'm not trying to be a smug PS3 owner, and I don't have an xbox, but don't some games come on multiple discs because they refuse to just eat some humble pie and convert to bluray? Again, I'm not being smug, it's an honest question.

Knowing Microsoft, developing a brand new format that can adapt on it's own, and will take over the world.

True fact.
Didn't they try that with HD-DVD?

And they failed.

I reckon Xbox getting blu-ray would be a cheap copy of PS3.....like how both Playstation and Xbox now have motion controls like the Wii (facepalm).....Something new and original might be nice -_-.....you know, something the competitor DOESN'T have...

Is it so important now to be original that we're going to call copycat at the notion of two consoles using the same disc medium?

Tape decks are tots coming back. Maybe some 8 inch floppy disks as well.

In all seriousness Microsoft will probably try to "develop" a new platform or just use BD's it's tough to say. Though I like the idea of them using SDHC cards but I feel the chance for piracy would be huge. They would have to develop a proprietary card and other features for security, I mean look what happened with the DS and R4's and other various flashcarts.

I just hope to god they don't try to be the Steam of Consoles, because I don't usually keep my 360 hooked up to live(I don't really care for multiplayer most things I play are single player).

I cannot believe nobody has said "X-Ray" yet.
Death-Ray, Done.

Anyway, back on topic :

I hope its not Blu-Ray, I do not want to shell out 100 dollars per game, As far as I know, MOST of the time PC games are a lot cheaper than 360 Games, which are a LOT more cheaper than PS3 Games, and perhaps part of the reason PS3 games are expensive is because of the cost of Blu-Rays.

...Unless if its because of how for every Ps3 sold, sony is making a loss...

Either way, Im more in favor of Hard Drive Direct Downloads.

On topic: Blue-ray....or USB's or something but...Blue-ray
I was thinking USB's ages ago as a format for Movies/Games, and to be honest it could easily work, i'm surprised no one has used it as a format.

OT: Blu-Ray for sure, although as stated the USB idea could easily work

I think what it boils down to is this simple fact..How many CD's can you fit in a box...how many USB's. Which is more expensive

thats a terrible idea, think of how much they will charge for that crap.

as it is, the xbox's on demand feature is already really bad at pricing.

I'm going to assume the next xbox won't have blu-ray. It would be lovely if it did, but it probably won't. DVDs are already too small for many games. They're even trying to squeeze out a last drop of life with the incoming May firmware update that gives a 15 percent-ish boost to disc space for their games.

If not blu, What are they planning on doing? Maybe trying to make their own new format just for the new console? Staying with DVDs even? Thoughts?
What games are too small to fit on DVDs? I don't think I own a single game that isn't on a single disc :S

Given the cost and general annoyance of bluray, I don't understand why anyone uses it. Flash memory is so much more versatile and works with much cheaper hardware. When ebay sells 32gb USB sticks for $~30 methinks there's absolutely no need for expensive and unnecessary blu rays or blu ray drives.

Sony can push blu ray as hard as they like, but it's expensive, unnecessary and easily substituted with cheap flash hardware or digital distribution.

Yeh, sure, because the Xbox was a cheap copy of the PS2 and the Wii Was a cheap copy of the Xbox simply because they all used the DVD format?

Just because a system uses the same disk format doesn't mean they are cheap copy's of one another.

Not unless Microsoft were hit with a Monumental Stupidity Ray. That's a massive financial investment with nothing to offset it. It would mean a massive increase in the costs of both the console AND the physical media.

Staying with DVDs even?
Possibly.

Thoughts?
