Welp, guess I was right to jump the console ship when I did. This is just infuriating, because they're alienating the majority of the current xbox fanbase which probably doesn't have fiber optic or comcast internet. I myself have to work on an internet with a 128 kb/s bandwith cap, and can't afford to have ANYTHING taking up bandwith if the rest of the household wants to even use the internet (especially my mother, who works from home a lot).

Yet they also say it's up to the publisher... so I wonder if the only games requiring always-online are going to be Activision games and EA games...

Anyways, I REALLY wish that the gaming press, upon Microsoft OFFICIALLY declaring it is always-online, would just boo the speaker off the stage, but I know that will never happen :(

I don't take "practically confirmed" news very seriously but yes, an always-online console would put the suck in sucky.

I figure with the huge amount of rumors surrounding the always-online functionality it's almost 100% confirmed at this point. That's why I say "practically".

After all about the same level of rumors surrounded the PS4 and its hardware and most of those turned out to be true.

Wait, how can you have offline games on an always-online console? The reason an always-online console is such a disgrace is that it requires an internet connection to do anything on.
If it's capable of running games offline then it's not always online, it just happens to have some games that require an always on connection to play... which is exactly what we have now.

Also I like that it runs on what is basically windows 8. That isn't a console, it's a crap computer. I really hate how the companies now are killing the major advantage of a console running a bare bones OS and virtually no other software so all the processing power could go straight into the games. Now they are sticking computer OS's in the consoles and giving them constant social media connectivity and a bunch of other crap. That advantage has been shot in the head. Well done.

Meh...

Quite honestly, as a Playstation gamer, the upcoming news about the next Xbox doesn't really have me on the edge of my seat, I'll be interested to see how severe the whole "Always online DRM" thing will be, but I'll remain unaffected.

Let me know when it's officially confirmed. If/when that happens, I'll shrug and bid a fond farewell to Halo and Gears of War, because I wouldn't buy that. It'll flop, "deal with it" watch me say all this again when the confirmation comes.

HAHAHAHAHA

Wait... so first, you get to pay 500 bucks to BUY the console. Then 60 dollars (or more, I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen shot to 70-80) to BUY a game. Then you have to PAY for your internet to USE the console. THEN you have to BUY xbox live to USE the internet that is REQUIRED to USE the console.

And what, exactly, is my incentive to buy it again?

I don't know when this will be revealed, but I sincerely doubt the always online functionality will be presented at all. As soon as it's mentioned though, I totally expect it to be boo'd off the stage.

I'll wait until it's actually confirmed.

Then guffaw in an obscenely loud manner and point at and ridicule Microsoft.

well given the success of simcity we'll see what the publishers have to say about that. if microsoft really is fool enough to make such a mistake after a perfect example has crashed and burned in front of you then i will be more than happy to stick with my PC.

I'll just have to keep telling myself even Microsoft wouldn't be THAT stupid. If it is, simply put: I won't buy it.

Welp, I've never bought an Xbox so far, and it looks like that's set to continue, if this is true.

I'd say that Microsoft just lost another customer... but like I said, I probably wouldn't have bought it anyways.

I'd be upset at them if I wouldn't be more upset at the people who will buy it, I'm sure there's people even posting here who say "outrage I will never buy this if it has always on!" an they will, they'll fold like paper and in the end if you do that? You're to blame for letting companies get away with that.

They may be the one putting it on the console but if enough people actually stood their ground instead of folding you show them it's NOT okay and could FORCE them for once to remove such a function. But we know that's not going to happen. 90% of the people who say they wont, will. Their friend will get one then they'll want to play and they'll go from "I will NEVER buy an always online xbox" to saying "it's not so bad, the servers go down sometimes"

That makes you at fault and you the enabler of that bullshit.

You hear that? That's the sound of a dying console. PS4 and Wii U may have taken huge missteps, but if this really happens then not only are Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot, they are hacking it off with a dull knife and throwing it to a pack of dogs.

Anonymous should do to MS what they did to Sony when it comes out, that would be hilarious.

Huh, well after the Wii U, and PS4 I'll build a gaming PC sometime next year. I've always been a Sony/Nintendo fan, but there are a lot of great games that're PC-exclusive, Steam, and GoG titles that I want to play. Torment, Star Wars KotoR, Valve games, Longest Journey, and some indie stuff.

I skipped the Xbox 360 this generation and looking back, there isn't one title that I missed out on. If BioShock and Mass Effect stayed exclusive than that would've brought me over, but with all the major titles multiplatform now (PS4/720/PC), I doubt they'll make something I want.

I don't care about any console loyalty crap, or anything like that, I just like good games. Always-Online? If that's true than I won't look into getting the new Xbox until mid-2015 at the earliest. My favorite types of games are JRPGs and Adventure games. Tales Of, Persona, Final Fantasy, Xenoblade, Valkyria Chronicles, Dark Souls, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Uncharted, BioShock, and Nintendo's 1st-party stuff. The Xbox 360 hasn't produced enough of content exclusively for its system seeing as how popular the PlayStation is world-wide, especially Japan.

For all those who do prefer and enjoy the Xbox, I hope the system performs well and has a successful launch. I hope things turn around and Microsoft keeps some exclusive IPs this generation, but if it's the same, oh well. The Xbox Live stuff doesn't look all that better to me than PSN. I can download retail games, classic titles, demos, movies, music, art, anime, message friends, and enjoy downloadable content. Netflix, YouTube, and CrunchyRoll are my only must-have apps and even the iPad has those and more, so both the PS4 and next Xbox fail to that.

Well, fuck buying that ever.
Seriously I don't get why companies think that always online is ever good.

Jesus Christ, why are you so stupid Microsoft?

I still fail to believe they can be THAT stupid. If they do this (the likelihood of which is becoming greater each day), they will get their asses handed to them by Sony and Nintendo. The PS4 and Wii U have their disadvantages, but this is just full retard.
