Ni No Kuni plot confusion, help? (potential spoilers)

Iv been playing through Ni no Kuni lately, and its a great game, but i just got to the point where you meet the emperor, and out of nowhere i got thrown for a loop and i lost the plot. Swaine mentioned something about (spoilers) time travel and theres 2 young princes and the little one looks like the great sages son whose also the prince... whats going on? did swaine come from the future and thats why he knows the sages son? did the sages son come from the future? This is why time travel always makes game plots either really cool or really confusing =P

Things will clear up as you progress. Don't worry. I was sorta confused at first too, but things are more or less explained later on.

Alright, yeah its getting a little clearer, just nobody explained what that dumb mist effect was supposed to mean. Thanks guys.
