So, while researching for and writing my essay on alchemy for my extended project, I came across this guy called Nicolas Flamel. I'd always thought that Flamel was a name made up by Rowling in the first Harry Potter but then again, she took the idea of the Philosopher's Stone.

The story of Nicolas Flamel is that he and his wife Perenelle lived in Paris, they found a 21 page book written in a foreign language, presumably Spanish because they travelled to Spain for a translation. I man told them that it was the Book of Abraham the Mage, an ancient book containing the secrets of alchemy, namely the transmutation of common metals to gold and the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone.

Flamel's obsession with the Stone began when he witnessed his wife's death. He wished to invent the Stone to bring his wife back to life and grant them both immortality. In 1418 he was registered dead, but when his tomb was visited, he'd pulled a Jesus and disappeared.

The legend is that he discovered the secret of the Stone and still lives to this day, travelling the world with many aliases. There have been several alleged sightings including at an opera in 1761, the latest spotting of him was in 2006 when he was seen entering a restaurant below his former house.

What do you think of the story then? I'm sceptic, but to be honest, I would sooner believe that a man achieved prolonged life through science, than the theory of Creationism.

Don't know,buuuut...

Everything is possible. And yeah,it sounds slightly more plausible than world's end in 2012.

I Love Alchemy.
It is a kind of science, after all...
I wish it were true, but I prefer the prolonging of ones life through cybernetics...

It's always possible, but not likely. If the guy has learned the secret to eternal life, he's a bit of a dick for not sharing it with anyone though.

Think, if everyone knew, no one would want to die, the world would be even more overpopulated and we'd eventually die of starvation. Sure it's selfish to keep it to yourself, but he may have some (unintentional) cause not to allow people the secret.

I was under the impression that the philosopher's stone turned metals into gold.

Wait? He was real. Holy crap.

Anyway...
I think it is quite possible. We don't know everything in this world.

It's multi-purpose. the most know purpose is the transmutation of metals, but when combined with the power of the Elixir of Life, it can grant prolonged life.

what!
i can't believe people actually thought rowling came up with this stuff/
it's not that she invented a bunch of new stuff, it's that she integrated it all into one universe.

The elixir of life? So he would have to create not one, but two, fabled items?

The Elixir of Life is more of a universal medicine rather than a life prolonger. I guess the Elixir would just be used to keep your immune system up

Oh right. Still, I doubt the stone exists. It's too implausible for me to believe.

Thank god you didn't base your theory off Harry Potter.

I think that however unlikely it is that the story is true, there is a chance of it being real. After all, didn't someone say that all legends have a basis in truth?

What a load. I can't believe anyone would take this sort of thing seriously. Sure it's a good story, but it's about as likely as a witch living in a ginger bread house or a wolf cross dressing to eat a little girl.

Let's keep the fairy tales where they belong shall we?

When your "science" says the secret of immortality is ingesting mercury among other heavy metals, I'm not going to trust a word you say.

It's better than elvis being around...still we don't know everything in this world and nature has quite the power over us and life.

Verdict Plausible but very unlikely.

how many games and movies are based on myth and fairy tales. One can assume that the human imagination has to create ideas for them right? "What ifs" should be talked about so people can see if it's real or not.

I hope he's alive, cos that'd be cool.

There's a brilliant bit of Fiction based on this story, but what Flammel has to go through now-adays...look up "Flammel" on a book website.
It's not (necessarily) true, but it's a good read.

Nope. I'm not alive and I can't turn metal into gold*. Deal with it.

(Although alchemy would explain the ridiculous people who make everything out of gold because it's bling and badass and what not, I did not condone that either, and I did not supply it to them, they actually wasted resources on that.)

Edit: *Actually, yes, I can, at least some metals, it's an involved chemical (not alchemical) process and costs more than buying the gold straight away.
