I probably get about 90% completed. Only a few I don't where it's boring or other things happen. So RDR is a game which I just got distracted by small things and the story never compelled me. FFXIII bored me so much I just don't bother to try and finish it, probably will one day though.

Most games I finish though, even if I'm not hugely interested in the game itself because I like to see the thoughts behind the story etc, where there are some.

I'm yet to finish Bioshock, Half Life One and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Mainly for the reasons the OP gave.

I tend to finish all the games I play. I feel that if I spent the money on it, at least I can finish it. I have not yet encountered a game so bad that I just can't play anymore.

I haven't, however, finished New Vegas. I have a problem where I'll install mods until the game crashes on start-up so I completely uninstall it, forget about it for a few months, and come back and start installing mods again. And every time I come back I start new characters.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out it's true.

If I stop playing a a game, it's because I can't beat a level and I'm not able to skip it and I'm not interested enough to keep going.

Every once in a while i lose interest in a game i own (this happened very early in the first assassin's creed) or get to a very frustrating point (i haven't beaten Lost Odyssey because of this damn fight on the 4th disk) but i never just give up on a game. i cant afford that shit, anyway. 1000 dollars for 100 dollars worth of playtime? no, thanks.

This is why I only buy good games (games i know from my years of experience that i personally will enjoy)

When I was younger, like 8 or something, I mainly never ended up completing most of my games apart from the rare few. But now I complete most of them now, as long as there not very very bad games.

I admit I don't finish a lot of games, if I get bored and/or stuck, but not 9 out of 10. That figure seems unbelieveably high unless you define completed as getting all the achievements etc, which I never do.

Well 1. I'd like to see their studies.

2. "the psychology of completion"

Do they mean 100% completion or just the story? I've only ever completed 1 or 2 games 100%

3. "People need time to check their Facebook, send a Twitter, be witty on their blog, play with their phone ? oh, and that game you made. If they feel as though the end is far away, they'll simply say, 'I don't have time for that' and stop playing."

Thats just total bullshit (for me at least). I spend maybe 5 minutes on Facebook every day, no twitter, no blog and I only play with my phone in class soooo yeah this just sounds really petty who said this again?

"Konami's Jeremy Airey"

Well, Konami's Jeremy Airey, maybe you should just make some more compeling games, mmm? We don't have to play them, you know. Plus we already bought the game what else are you expecting of us?

"Raptr, the gaming social network, vouches for that, noting that only 10 percent of those in its service who have played Red Dead Redemption have finished the last mission for one of 2010's most acclaimed games. Raptr's John Lee, with a career that included executive jobs at Capcom, THQ and Sega, recalled being told the completion figure was about 20 percent."

I seriously doubt that. But I am the only one of my friends that has started and actually finished it but 1/3 isn't quite 1/5 or 1/10. Not to mention offline players.

But really these stats are bullshit. Theres almost no data and all that I'm getting out of this is that CNN doesn't know how to do good video game reporting. I guess its easier to make up shit from a half-assed "study" then actually do any work. But if thats what people read I guess that gives you a good look at what kind of work you're doing doesn't it, CNN?

Edit: My RDR single player is at 98.7% WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!!

Oh and I went over to http://trueachievements.com and looked at the achievement Nature or Nurture? because I'm pretty sure thats the last campaign mission and 45,043/85,658 of the gamers that played RDR have it. Thats 53%, Jeremy Airey.

I've been playing games for 18 years, and there a lot of games I've left unfinished. I'm actually a collector now, so I've got about ten games that are unfinished at the moment. I tend to switch back and forth between them.
I will say this though, every game that I ever left unfinished has nagged at me for years to come. Eventually, you have to go back and finish it. Let me tell you, finishing Final Fantasy VII after five years is a truly gratifying experience.

Out of all the games I've owned since getting an Xbox 360 in 2007, there's only three games I can remember that I didn't complete. And that was only because I borrowed them from my friend who wanted them back before I could finish them.

I honestly can't remember the last time I didn't complete a game sheerly out of disinterest. I'm a completionist.

I remember when I first played Dragon Age: Origins. Played it for about 15 hours, going through the story and so, but when I finally romanced Alistar, my main motivation to play was gone and I just quit.

It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I finally got my rear in gear, and finally decided to finish it. And of course get the best ending were my character managed to apoint Alistar as king, marry him, and survive the final battle.

And they lived happily ever after...

... or did they?

I try to finish every game I buy. I don't buy many, so when I do, I want to know I'm getting my money's worth.
Games I haven't finished:

Fallout: New Vegas: Good game, but I gave it a bit of a break, and just can't get back into it. I found the same thing with 3; once you have a bit of a break, it takes a big effort to get back into trekking for miles and miles, saving ammo gradually, being really conservative with supplies, etc.

Tomb Raider Underworld: A bug wouldn't let me go anywhere. Bugger starting again, that game was painful enough.

Final Fantasy XIII: No. I refuse.

Valkyria Chronicles: It just got too hard, and, similar to fallout, I forgot the little details about battle that can win or lose it for you.

It's from mainstream media, surprise anyone? They have an agenda to say this so it's likely bias.

Even if the figures are true, they fail to answer whether it's genre, platform or game difficulty specific.

Quite odd that people on this website are such a proof of the opposite, but maybe The Escapist just attracts that kind of crowd.

I can really find myself in that statistic. The games I finished I can count on my fingers. That might be because I don't generally play the mainstream game (I wait until they're priced down, or until my system can handle them), but that's definitely not the only reason.

Sometimes I just get bored of the gameplay (Hello, AssCreed 1), sometimes I get too frustrated (Hello, Morrowind), sometimes I end up boring myself because I want that 100% complete and it annoys me that I've missed something, or I just end up wasting my time on sidequests and get bored (Hello, Dragon Age).

When they say "People need time to check their Facebook, [...]", I can vouch for that. I love gaming, but even if I'm playing a game I'm really enjoying, I often quit every 30m~1h and check mails/facebook. This problem is less of an issue when I'm playing something windowed (I can alt-tab around) or with steam chat access (even though I only have one friend), and when I played WoW and many guildies were online. Maybe I just get "lonely" when gaming?

It's not something I'm proud of, but I often even end up wasting hours and hours on dumb flash games because I don't want to boot a "real" game.

Any MMO, Diablo etc. You CAN'T finish those games. So, statistics = skewed.

And GTA San Andreas etc.? You telling me that anyone's finished that 100% without cheating? I can't even do the Pearls bit WITH cheating.

I finish most games... around 90%. That includes old games in which I encounter bugs/crashes (Grim Fandango and both KOTORs) and genuinely boring games.

I finish most I start

Its just JRPG's I struggle with, because they required a huge investment of time, so I have to chip away at it for months on end. Damn you huge dungeons and bonus material!

i have a tendency to read reviews and essays on any media i buy (i havn't got a lot of spare change) especially games. I ask friends too but mostly critical rveiews and analysis. I like to be assured i'll like it before i purchase or at least be intrigued y some of the content.

Except Valve games they were all forced down my throat by a friend, i guess i should thank him
