He was almost verbatim modeled after Cobra from the manga/anime series Space Adventure Cobra. Cobra was, of course, the typical manly man with a bit of a goofball streak who loved women, good food, cigars (though Dante hates smoking, and liquor. Hell, Cobra voice actor (who sadly passed away some time ago) even voiced a character in the DMC anime. Dante is the typical Japanese definition of a manly foreigner, the kind that is cocky, fun, and strong but also a bit of a goofball as well as having heart of gold. And despite all the goofiness he's still AWESOME. He's the John McClane of gaming
Okay I might not be all that clued up on the anime/manga (I did play the games though) but I was more pointing out the idiocy of calling Dante a transsexual rather than giving an elaborate detailed biography of the character. :)

OT: Hm, I might consider picking up the game if I see it on sale. Else I probably wont bother, I was never really a hardcore DMC fan anyway. Infact I'm not really a hardcore fan of anything...

To me there's a difference between a "change" and a complete bastardization, they have changed almost everything I know of that is Dante. Everything canonically about Dante has pretty much been changed as far as I can tell. Sure they haven't shown anything about him really but guess what if it looks like a duck, then it usually ends up being a duck.
Which is why it's going to be a reboot. Reboots tend to do that.

Dante was originally a kickassing demon slayer. This Dante is kicking asses of demons in a gruffy style. Looks like a kickass badass to me.

Also regardless of the fans "acting childish" or being "immature" doesn't mean that NT have to act in the exact same manner, they could very well take the high road but they choose not to by doing shit like this. They are on their high horse and show no signs of coming off of it, because they obviously know what DMC is all about more so than anyone else apparently.
Either way would be preferable to me, honestly. I find it kind of refreshing to see a developer vehemently stick to their guns rather than relying on the standard "No comment" or just CYA methods of marketing. It's fun to see a developer expose their ass and just daring anyone to kick it.

I'm not worried about the game at all, i'm worried about the series that I know is Devil May Cry will end up going the way everyone says that the Star Wars prequels did.
So the series will have a slight stain on it, big whoop. The difference here being that the fans of Star Wars didn't outright condemn the Star Wars prequels until they actually saw the shit for themselves.

Like I said, if it's shit, it's shit, but I bet even if it was pure gold the fans would still rag on it.

I do apologize if i'm coming off as a complete jackass, like I believe I am. I had the same reaction with Beth and Fallout 3 (which is an alright game, but I really don't see it as an actual Fallout game, more lie Elder Scrolls, with guns. but that's just me)
See, now that right there is a more mature response than 80% of the current fanbase. As I said, I don't mind you guys being worried for the game, I would be to. But outright condemning the game, blatantly saying that you will never be persuaded (not saying you said that, but others have) is just being immature about the whole thing.

I'm just repeating shit I've been told, I can't promise that it's accurate. What I've heard is that the designer and co-founder Tameem Antoniades just made the character look like him.

1) They have the same hair cut, other than that they don't look alike

2) Doubtful he himself (or at least, he alone) designed the character

3) Its not that unusual; Adam Jensen from Human Revolution was based on the art director, although the character was designed by a different artist

OT: As far as I'm aware there's been like 2 trailers for this thing. Not sure how everyone knows exactly what the character's like from that.

And complaining because they're trying to not making the writing shit? OK then guys.

Having said that, his comments were unnecessary. They should just prove themselves the old-fashioned way instead of antagonizing a bunch of (ridiculously) hostile people already.

Actually DMC4 ended with a fuckton of questions about Dante's entire family line more or less.

That's really my biggest gripe, not the re-design. The unanswered questions.
Gotta agree there and that's why I'm mostly angry at the idea of a reboot.

In particular, even though most people like to pretend it didn't exist, I enjoyed DMC2 a fair bit and the questions left at its ending obviously mean that takes place last chronologically, thus no questions for that are answered.

Besides, the reboot to a franchise that isn't even old is ridiculous. That's like rebooting Kingdom Hearts. >.>

Yeah, I WANT to like it, I want to like the ugly brown scenery, I want to like the stupid, half-hearted reboot, I want to like the shitty engine, I want to like that you made Dante look like you, I want to like it because I like DMC 1, 3, and 4, BUT I DON'T because I have some standards and you're an obnoxious, smug, asshole.

At this point my motivation to hate and not buy this game isn't even about the game changes anymore, it's about showing developers that if they say "Shut up, go screw yourself, and buy our game because we know better," that we will respond with a unified "Fuck you to," and not touch the damn thing.

I don't hate this game for the character design, I hate this game for having two weapons with snatch abilities on them. It just brings the gameplay to a much lower level when combined with a slower frame rate.

I wont buy it because I don't like any bit of it. They changed Dante too much and I am only going to assume that the music that I loved the series for is going out the window.

The next Devil May Cry I buy will have to continue Nero's story and reveal the secrets of his demonic arm (although I have my theories).

I don't know why everyone's up set about the new DMC, the fourth one was utter shit too, did you expect this one to be any good?

Didn't you hear? KH3 is going to be a reboot.

Just kidding. Really, it's never coming out.

Well that's not what I do, hell I don't even condemn CoD. To much gamer in me :p I want to see things succeed, I want the industry to flourish. But at the same time I will admit I do loathe/hate CoD (I may not like it but more power to you if you do)

I honestly don't think i'll buy this game, sure right now it's for petty reasons mostly, but honestly nothing impressed me from that trailer. I expected something, well just something more from it, and yes I know this is one of the first few trailers but I think i'll just go back and play either 3 or 4 (probably 3 so I can start challenging myself again).

I hope to be proved wrong, I really do but right now I honestly just don't see it being a successor to DMC

I'm still interested.

But I stand by what I said before. This "new" Dante should have been a straight up new hero, not a redesign of the old one.

Wat.

Are you telling me this [http://gematsu.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/DmC-Returns-E3.jpg], with it's bright colors, blue, red, and various yellows is brown and shitty and worse compared to this [http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/65068/DMC4a_qjpreviewth.jpg], with a slightly diluted color palette (but still pretty nice looking)?

Of all the arguments, "it looks (visually) like shit/like PS1 graphics!" is the argument I have never understood.

I picked up the original DMC for 3 bucks yesterday. Popped it in, slashed a guy in the air, kept him afloat with bullets, said "yup thats a devil may cry game" and called it a day.

You do realise there is a middle group between bear fighting muscle bound block head and campy the gay pirate of queersville?
Ah...that made my day....I don't know why. But thank you all the same!

OT: I'm not a big fan of the character design, and fight it all ya want, they look similar enough. And I say that because there's no other reason for Dante to look like that. Dante would ooobviously be different, sure. But no one could have taken a look at that and said. "Perfect!" I don't mind change one bit. But there's good change, and then there's bad change. Surely they've been around longer than that. But, it's still a DMC game, so I was gonna give it a try all the same. After THAT though? I...don't think so. When someone starts telling me they know what I want better than I do, especially when it's concerning games...I'm a little irked. I'll take my wallet over to other projects thank you.

Just because we want it to be an awesome game doesn't mean it isn't complete shit i.e. D.N.F.

And no... I guess not. I'm hopeful for that 2013 release date they were pushing for... *cries*

.... he looks more like John Cusack to me.

And I have to say, even though they don't look exactly alike it doesn't mean they don't look similar. They do. And what ColdStorage said about the "model" style cheekbones is part of what pisses me off.
Why does he look like a skinny model? And why are people saying he looks punk? I mean... I get it with the black hair and wife beater shirt but if they wanted punk, go with this [http://dark.pozadia.org/images/wallpapers/95775386/Punk/Punk%20Rockers.jpg], not this [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lt-gufl-qiY/ScaAi402DrI/AAAAAAAAA9I/VOc5D0uYGMI/s400/n578990136_4534778_9157.jpg]

I actually agree with the studio's general sentiment that everyone has overreacted to what we've seen so far and those sorts of fans probably need to chill out.
