Nintendo - about to make another big mistake?

I've been thinking about poor Nintendo. Of course, we customers are very happy with price cuts, but it is a clear reflection that something went badly wrong with Nintendo's marketing of the 3DS. Price is certainly dependent on supply and demand. Nintnedo themselves confessed the original high release price of the 3DS was a result of the enthusiastic reception it got at E3 last year (2010). But I suspect that the excitement came from the gimmicky 3d effect which at the time was something new, but gimmicks do not last long and few people will commit to buy a product just for the sake of a gimmick.

But the big mistake is this: Nintendo already have sold massive numbers of DS consoles. Why 'upgrade' to a 3DS when a DS does everything you want and has a massive amount of owners who are still happy to buy more games for it? This mistake has already been made.

The "another big mistake" is this: the Wii U. So many families bought a Wii. Far more than Nintendo expected. Does Nintendo think this will mean they will also go out and buy a Wii u when it is released? I don't think so. The type of people invested in the Wii are happy with what their Wii can do and are not so interested in keeping up with the latest technology. They might have liked to have HD graphics when they bought their Wii's but they can live without it This massive customer base of Wii users are far more interested in new content for their old Wii's than shelling out for a new console.

It is imperative that the Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games for those that do upgrade but I don't think the masses will spend alot of money on a new Wii U when they already have a working Wii. So if Nintendo want to make money they must keep producing new games for their original wii console.

Zelda Skyward Sword should sell extremely well for Nintendo and will thereby move a ton of motion-plus devices to those not already committed to the 'new' hardware. My advice to Nintendo is to not make Zelda Skyward Sword into the Wii's swansong. Nintendo should appreciate their massive Wii customer base and keep selling them more (decent) games - especially games that benefit from the motion-plus. This will help them ride out the financial losses generated by the 3Ds and the possible losses in the future generated by the release of the Wii U.

What are your thoughts?

Honestly?

My question is why the hell they don't want to localize the Rainfall games. It's not gonna cost them too much, and they WILL make money off of this because a lot of wii owners are starving for good games.

Personally I haven't even booted mine up since I finished Sonic Colors. And I've already bough most of the good wii games.

If they want to remain fresh in our minds, and have a loyal consumer base for the WiiU...this would be a good move.

Wii U is largely a mistake because they are taking a party console and creating a controller that's both prohibitively expensive and whose games revolve around a one-unit experience.

I don't think releasing a new Wii is really a mistake. I think an expensive peripheral deal is.

Similarly, I don't think releasing a new DS is the problem.

But these mistakes, really, have already been made.

I'm happy that they are doing mistakes, maybe it'll teach them to stop making remakes and annyoing gimmicks.

Yes they need to satisfy the loyal consumer base like you and reward you for remaining loyal in order to encourage you to upgrade to a Wii U. But the vast majority of Wii owners are not loyal Nintendo gamers. This is their first and only console and won't necessarily be buying a Wii U just because Nintendo tell them to.

They will however be happy to spend their money on MORE decent games for their Wii even though it is an 'old' console.

I like to think that the 3DS isnt an upgrade like the DSi. This is their next handheld, for the next 5 or 6 years. Sure its the DS again in 3d. But its was more powerful then before.

I like to think of it this way, Would you rather see them do what Sony and MS do? Copy and paste the same controller but with beefier hardware?

If we didn't have them taking risks the industry wouldn't be where it is today.

Really, the problem with this line of thinking is expecting that the new consoles were going to be an overnight success.

I mean really, does anyone remember how long it took for the ps3 to catch on? it didn't happen immediately, it happened when it started actually getting games.

NTDOY (Nintendo) stock has dropped by almost 50% from the start of this year up to now. Currently it's at 19.1, the lowest its been in 5 years.

Just thought i'd leave that there for our fellow analysts to speculate over.

I haven't booted up my Wii in a year because I'm preoccupied with the 360(I am not a fanboy). I'm not gonna play it untill I get my hands on No More Heroes 1 and 2 (apparently they have a 3 coming out) so it's all xbox for me. At least until I get a PS3 because Versus XIII is an exclusive.

I just don't see what the appeal of the Wii-U is supposed to be. Isn't it kinda copying and mod-tracing the PS3-PSP connectivity gimmick? It's not neccesarily anything new, it's just adding a new gimmick to the Wii and changing its outer packaging.

I just fail to see what's suppose to be "better" about this. Nintendo's game has seemingly been to "defy the norm", starting with the N64 and sticking to cartridges, to the Gamecube to using only Mini DVDs, then the Wii with its movement gimmick (which is quickly fizzling), and now this... I don't even know what to call this.

I think Nintendo really just needs to sit down and conform a bit here
