I've been thinking about poor Nintendo. Of course, we customers are very happy with price cuts, but it is a clear reflection that something went badly wrong with Nintendo's marketing of the 3DS. Price is certainly dependent on supply and demand. Nintnedo themselves confessed the original high release price of the 3DS was a result of the enthusiastic reception it got at E3 last year (2010). But I suspect that the excitement came from the gimmicky 3d effect which at the time was something new, but gimmicks do not last long and few people will commit to buy a product just for the sake of a gimmick.
But the big mistake is this: Nintendo already have sold massive numbers of DS consoles. Why 'upgrade' to a 3DS when a DS does everything you want and has a massive amount of owners who are still happy to buy more games for it? This mistake has already been made.
The "another big mistake" is this: the Wii U. So many families bought a Wii. Far more than Nintendo expected. Does Nintendo think this will mean they will also go out and buy a Wii u when it is released? I don't think so. The type of people invested in the Wii are happy with what their Wii can do and are not so interested in keeping up with the latest technology. They might have liked to have HD graphics when they bought their Wii's but they can live without it This massive customer base of Wii users are far more interested in new content for their old Wii's than shelling out for a new console.
It is imperative that the Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games for those that do upgrade but I don't think the masses will spend alot of money on a new Wii U when they already have a working Wii. So if Nintendo want to make money they must keep producing new games for their original wii console.
Zelda Skyward Sword should sell extremely well for Nintendo and will thereby move a ton of motion-plus devices to those not already committed to the 'new' hardware. My advice to Nintendo is to not make Zelda Skyward Sword into the Wii's swansong. Nintendo should appreciate their massive Wii customer base and keep selling them more (decent) games - especially games that benefit from the motion-plus. This will help them ride out the financial losses generated by the 3Ds and the possible losses in the future generated by the release of the Wii U.
