If Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Kirby, Fire Emblem, and Smash Bros aren't hardcore (I'm cringing as I type that word) then I don't want to be hardcore. (Cringing again)

Not for them it isn't.

I'm sure a few gamers might have a problem with it.
I think Nintendo can point to a few million people per title that don't have a problem with it.

There's nothing wrong with that, seriously hardcore these days means shooters with grey and brown graphics (bar few exceptions) and we've got enough of those.

I love me some Nintendo, though I'm not exactly sure how one would define "hardcore" anymore. I'd think of it as a game that can offer players a challenge, where as a lot of people seem to think it's a game with obscene gore and bewbage. If that's the case, I'll pass.

Their shopping channel is so popular because it lets you play the older, better titles, pixel perfect.

Why, are they too busy building forts out of money? Come on Nintendo...Laziness isn't an admirable trait. Get your workforce to work.

And thus, the penny drops. Has it actually taken them this long to admit it? Seriously, that's been a fact for years.

If people don't want Nintendo brand creativity in Super Mario Galaxy then they certainly don't want it in Bioshock or Gears of War. Nintendo, Iwata in particular, made what is regarded as one of the greatest proper hardcore RPGs of all time with Earthbound and did the unwashed masses of hardcore western gamers appreciate it? No, the theme wasn't generic fantasy enough or whatever but it just didn't sell that well.

Does no one remember "Geist"? It was a game developed by Nintendo for the Gamecube in order to appeal to a more mature audience. It didn't do so well. It had an interesting premise though. The idea was you are a ghost who must scare your victims on a military base in order to possess them in order to infiltrate stop some evil plot army plot. I can't remember much else but it failed to wow critics and gamers alike.

I remember that game. I loved it.

It was a fairly more hardcore game, that much is true, but what separates it from more modern 'hardcore' games is the slavish devotion to realism, which, as Yahtzee explained way back in his Console Rundown, is a dead-end road for two reasons: 1) consoles can only get so good at duplicating the real thing, and 2) the real thing doesn't require a controller, or a power strip, or a monitor, and with today's medicine, not even two working arms or legs!

So they provide something reality doesn't. And, what do you know, it's working.

At least it knows where it stands. Unlike the other consoles, who want to have their cake and eat it too.
What else do you do with cake? I hate that analogy.

And the hardcore/casual theme returns, full of blurred lines and multiple definitions.
Red Steel games were supposed to be an appeal to that audience. Red Steel 2 is,well, attempt 2.

No one cares about the hardcore, "Halo and CoDz are teh only g00d games, all 3lse 4re the ghey lo10l0ol"

Most people that actually have a decent and somewhat thought out opinion play at least one of these "casual" games.

I play CoD, Mass Effect, Gears, Halo(not anymore),L4D2, but I also play Metroid, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Brawl.
Just keep working on the Zelda and Metroid title, and you'll be fine Nintendo.

I think Nintendo is just trying to find a middle ground. I don't want to use the two tearms people have brought up here so "Hardcore" Shall be called M and "Casual" Will be called E. They want more of a T, If that makes any sence.

It is a problem for people who want those hardcore titles. Personally I'd like to see if Shigeru Miyamoto has something rated M running around in that head of his.

I really hope it's not porn.

Is he saying that a game has to be rated 'M' to be hardcore?

That's nonsense, obviously. A hardcore game is a game sought after by a hardcore gamer. A hardcore gamer is one whose interest in gaming far exceeds that which would be deemed average.

But what do I know? I've barely even played my copy of BioShock.

It took a while to Nintendo to finally admit that, i respect that they stick with games they've been making for years, but don't let the fact you can't tap mainstream, dishearten you nintendo we already knew that for years.

Titles like Metroid Prime 3 and LoZ: Twilight Princess are already rated T, so Nintendo has proven they can make games for that demographic. They're probably not jumping into the hardcore stuff anytime soon, so it's a pretty safe bet they'll be sticking with the T.

Oh, and welcome to the Escapist! There are free cookies in the cafeteria and the basement is off-limits.

I'd be fine with their lack of hardcore games if they just made another 3D Kirby side-scroller.
