I cannot believe he just said that.

Was walking through town with one of my new housemates today, and he asked me what playstation games I owned. Pretty much went through my list (what I can remember from home) before I asked him whether he went in for the 3DS like my other friend did.
To which he genuinly replied;

"I don't own any Nintendo consoles, I don't play casual games."

I think the Wii has that distinction, I don't think Gamecube/N64/etc... would follow that logic however. Hell some of the best gaming times I had were on the N64 with Mario Kart and GoldenEye.

I almost fumed. I just bought "Ghost Trick" yesterday. Now -that- is a game.
If he had merely said the Wii it might not have stung, but stating he NEVER owned any Nintendo console or handheld because of its casual status. I don't even.

Nintendo consoles aren't casual...not even the Wii is, really.

The DS definitely isn't. It's like the PS2 of handhelds.

well nintendo certainly have more family orientated games (still doesnt make it casual tho) but its an undertsandable statement as he clearly doest play them so probably doesnt know. anyway even if ninetedo was made entirely of casual games would it really matter solong as you enjoy them?

I would say that Nintendo appeals to the casual gamer, but doesn't only have casual games. Sure they have more than the other console makers, but since when has that mattered? I believe PS2 had that distinction last time around, so it changes each generation.

Wait, Nintendo is staffed by casual consoles? Or is their building made of consoles? :D

OT: Nintendo has a history of brutally difficult games.

Your housemate needs to be smacked, then after that go back to enjoying your Nintendo games.

Damn right they don't know what hard is. Seriously, fuck those spinning rhino's in that one castle of Super Mario World.

OT:I would consider nintendo consoles to have become more for the casual market since the release of the Wii. Before that I consider Nintendo the last bastion of the 90's game development mentality.

Most games that come out for the Wii are casual because that is how the system was marketed, but there are some really good games for it. I personally own all the consoles (hooray for stable employment and disposable income!) but I don't have the 3DS yet, I am going to wait for a while, at least until there is a large list of good games for it.

OT: Your friend isn't one of those guys who only plays games that come in shades of brown and grey, is he? I feel sorry for people like that. So many great games they will never play.

MOST of it's consoles are, that's the problem - not all of course but after releasing the wii and about a half a dozen variations of the DS which have tiny useless extra features you can hardly be surprised of him thinking that.

Your housemate is ignorant, plain and simple.

Dismissing an entire company because of that is the exact same as all those annoying teenagers who make such a big deal about how they only play M-rated games because they're better.

Know what I say? His loss. He'll never know GoldenEye 64, Super Smash Bros., or Legend of Zelda. But that's ok. Long as he's content with boring, same-y first-person shooter after boring, same-y first-person shooter.

Because Nintendo has never had first person shooters on their consoles? Because the other consoles have nothing but first person shooters? Oh wait, both are wrong.

It's funny how you countered the opinion that Nintendo only has one type of game by dismissing all the other consoles as having nothing but "same-y first-person shooter".

Irony!

Um... Who cares? The whole "hardcore v. casual" things is stupid as it is. It has good games, so why should anyone care what others call it?
