The Wii was far more casual than any other Nintendo Console but Nintendo's past consoles and even it's current hand-helds aren't made strictly for the casual players. They are more accessible sure but they're not casual.

Sounds like your friend is a bit uninformed.

Because Nintendo has never had first person shooters on their consoles? Because the other consoles have nothing but first person shooters? Oh wait, both are wrong.

It's funny how you countered the opinion that Nintendo only has one type of game by dismissing all the other consoles as having nothing but "same-y first-person shooter".

Irony!

could also say;

As long as Nintendo players are happy having nothing but "same-y zelda games" :p

Oh no you didn't! *finger snaps*

Oh god... I hear them... The fanboys and girls. Run!

Kinda agree really.

In the current generation, the Wii and Nintendo's hand-held are certainly less known for their mature games and tend to have quite a number of party games.

That's not to say they all are, but, there's more of them than anything else.

For the record, name a single "Party game" (that is, a game consisting entirely of mini-games) on the PS3 or Xbox 360.

Now try to name some for the Wii.

Sure, you'll find some for both, but, chances are the Wii games will be much more well-known.

Well, i have ALOT of friends who have either a PS3/360 and litterally only play Call of Duty.

If thats not casual, what is?

To be honest its a bit hard to make horror games or a shooter on a consle which only redeeming factor is it's gimmicks...the wii has good games but they're the ones that use the gimmicks the best

Nothing casual about Nintendo consoles other than the Wii. That was Nintendo's golden ticket back to their #1 spot, an untapped market of casual gamers not drained of their income since the Atari 2600 days. There are still core titles on the Wii but most are plagued with shoddy motion controls... or motion controls period. I'm not a fan of them at all though, Move and Kinect included. Forcing me to exert myself with no physical feedback does in no way add to the immersion of a game.

Honestly, I've used my Wii for more downloaded classic games than actual Wii titles, I probably have about three times more classic downloads than new Wii games. Classic games I still own in their original format mind you, but having them on the Wii saves me the trouble of dragging those old systems out and hooking them up.

If anyone ever tells you Nintendo has always been for kids and casual gamers, make them play Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Japanese Mario 2) and show them just how casual it is... you may find them dropkicking the TV in horrid rage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Wii_video_games

Obviously it being wikipedia I can't say how accurate or complete that list is but casual games are the best sellers by a pretty large margin, especially outside of first/second party titles.

I'm still confused by how there are non casual games isn't gaming a hobby, wouldn't that make all games casual.

Ultimately, "casual" is the new "kiddy". Nintendo has pretty much always had some sort of stigma attached to it.

Your housemate is ignorant, plain and simple.

Dismissing an entire company because of that is the exact same as all those annoying teenagers who make such a big deal about how they only play M-rated games because they're better.

Know what I say? His loss. He'll never know GoldenEye 64, Super Smash Bros., or Legend of Zelda. But that's ok. Long as he's content with boring, same-y first-person shooter after boring, same-y first-person shooter.

Know what I say? Your loss. You'll never know LittleBigPlanet, Mass Effect, or countless awesome PSN and Xbox Live Arcade games. But that's ok. Long as you're content with whatever you're playing.

The Wii I definitely consider a casual console. It's just not a good system for me but everyone else's mileage will vary. Up until the release of the Gamecube I considered Nintendo to be the best of console companies, after that they lost their status.

And? Who cares? Making this arbitrary division means nothing. Being a casual or "hardcore" console doesn't change the way you or he feels about the damn thing. Just tell him the games you like on it and why you think its a good system and move on.
