For some strange reason, Nintendo has banned SSBM from EVO.

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/jul/09/super-smash-bros-melee-no-longer-being-streamed-evo-2013-nintendo-not-granting-permission-broadcast/

While my money's on it to promote the new SSB or something, IMO this is a pretty jerk move, as IIRC fans donated to charity for the game to be at the event.

In the meantime, it will be replaced by Persona 4 Arena & King of Fighters '13.

Thoughts?

What a bunch of dicks. And do they think this will help their image? Sony is definitely going to take this generation by storm.

I'm wondering if Nintendo is really becoming antagonist to any form of video viewing of their games that is not directly controlled by them. I mean, they just had the Let's Play issue a couple months ago, though there were rumors that they started loosening up a little bit on that.

Something tells me, though, they want to get people more in the mindset for the new Smash Bros. They probably see "advertising" for Melee as potentially affecting sales of the new game. Still, they seem determined to be jerks to anyone who is involved with or enjoys following online videos and streaming of video games.

Edit: I should probably add that I'm not sure how Melee streaming would negatively affect sales of the new game. If anything, it will make people more excited for it.

While I am betting on Sony being on top of this generation by the end of it, I doubt it will be because of this. This might be a bad move by Nintendo, but they have taken many other stances that are more consumer-friendly, even beyond what Sony has done. I mean, they are the ones who said used games should be fought by making quality products that people don't want to sell.

Ummm...HOW? Because they made a few painfully easy jabs towards MS at E3 and are merely doing the bare minimum asked of them? That's not exactly "storm" material. A light shower perhaps, but that's about it

Anyway, I do wonder what caused this. Then again, considering the FGC's behavior as of late I can't help but think Reggie or Iwata was like "Do...we really want to be associated with this?"

I know it isn't just because of this, it's because of all the dick moves Microsoft and Nintendo are pulling. And even with that statement from Nintendo, it still doesn't change the fact that they're being a bunch of cocks to their fans. Sony may have done some things wrong in the past, but this generation they seem to be wising up.

Maybe because Microsoft was trying to implement draconian DRM into their console, hurt the used game market, and be anti-consumer as much as possible? Sony may have not done much, but in comparison to Microsoft they look a hell of a lot better.

Yeah, chalk me up as one of many who thinks Nintendo are being insanely idiotic about this. Honestly can't think of a good reason why they would do this.

Especially sucks for many of the guys that raised 90k+ for charity for SSBM to be there and now aren't even going to watch the bloody thing.

But I suppose I'm glad to see P4A get some coverage. I enjoy the game even though I suck at it.

I must ask, is this Nintendo of Japan doing this?
Or is this like Nintendo of America.

Because it's really weird that they are doing this now with media.

Especially considering how Nintendo of American is notorious lately for being complete assholes.

I really need to know what the specifics of this are. The tournament is still happening, it's just not being streamed.

According to a tweet from an organizer, it's NOA who did it. Give me a moment to find it.

*sigh*

Why am I not fucking surprised?
Is Nintendo headquarters aware of the fact that their North American base are doing a shitty job in the PR department?

Most of the big decisions, like what this one likely was, usually come from the "home front" HQ, so I'd guess NCL knows, or was breathing down their necks.

Also, here's the tweet I mentioned:

That's exactly what I want to know. And so far it only effects the STREAM; the tourney is still happening regardless

The entire situation implies that they didn't ask, but APEX streamed it and Nintendo didn't do anything about it. The other publishers haven't spoken either, AFAIK this is something only the Big N is doing.

That's interesting.
However we don't exactly know what Nintendo deems as a big enough thing to get headquarters involved.

Like I said this is really weird, because I know for a fact they do jack shit against Pokemon fans who have ROM hacks of their games and Pokemon battle simulation websites.
Yet they are going after legitimate Smash Bros. Tournaments?

However as someone said above it all depends on whether or not they got Nintendo's permission to do this in the first place.
Which I guess could easily turn the tables on who gets more sympathy.

Alright, it feels like a lot of these streamers haven't been actually talking to the companies, mostly because it hasn't been an issue before. I think the fault falls on both parties, I mean law lags behind and communities need time to grow so sometimes they fall under the radar a bit. It's possible they didn't know (you'd be surprised what companies tend to miss) and this was a casual C&D letter. I know there was a tweet that implied they were looking into it so there could be hope left. I'm not defending Nintendo's actions here, just that maybe it's not as bad as we all think(I know I read somewhere that Nintendo might be concerned about being associated with the FGC)?

My guess: there are some wonky legal issues involved regarding streaming the game. I very much doubt Nintendo are just being assholes.

I'm siding with the streamers. I see no way Nintendo would be damaged by this, and the company need every piece of mindshare it has. This and the LP fiasco make me guess this is part of some larger campaign Nintendo is doing against unlicensed videos; IIRC Japanese companies see YT as some pirate site(Ex: the Shining Force takedowns). As for the FGC, I've heard EVO streams are very tame compared to the usual shenanigans. There's a storm brewing one way or another.

As if I needed another reason to not buy any new Nintendo gimmicky horse shit. Call me crazy, but I don't really give a damn what the next stick I have to wiggle to get Link to pick up the same fucking hook shot he's had the last 20 years.

I'm going to take out a loan and buy a few more PS4s. Excuse me.
