I won't get a game just for the achievements, but I do like the small sense of accomplishment I get when I unlock one.

I would just like to point out that Nintendo also said that "Online gaming will not go anywhere" at some time or another.

Just a little food for thought.

I see no reason why Nintendo shouldn't include an achievement/trophy/badges system. While I understand their concern with how some games achievements would just feel like you're forced to do it, but it's the responsibility of the developer to use those systems well.

I always enjoy hearing the little *ding* sound whenever I get a trophy. It adds a whole new depth to the game, rewarding me for playing the game how I want to (if they're implemented well), rewarding me for doing something I didn't even know was possible, or even making me try out certain things that I may not have thought to do until I saw the trophy.

Ultimately, I am of the opinion that if you really MUST HAVE EVERY CHEESEMINT then you're doing it wrong.

Seriously, again with Nintendo refusing to implement new features because they are so stuck on gaming being in the past. You know the past where Nintendo was the only game in town and had no real competition. Achievements aren't the wave of the future. It's 3D technology which was introduced in the 60s with stupid glasses and the Wiimote, which is basically the same as the power glove.

Dear Nintendo, the future is not in the past.
Its not a big deal........There just achievements. Why should Nintendo do something that they feel is unessential to gaming. Hell i love getting that unknown achievement because i did something out of the ordinary but its not required

Achievements can be done well and done badly.

I like trophies like "Complete level 1 with no weapons" or "Complete all side-quests", even though I'd prefer in-game rewards for those kind of things.

On the other hand trophies like "Kill 100 enemies" or "Complete level 1" should just die completely.

If you're an achievement hunter you likely don't play Nintendo exclusively to begin with. Different gamer styles, different rules of what is cool. Personally I prefer the hidden achievement style of things because those don't feel like a checklist you have to go through.

ROFL.

It amuses me that the "hardcore" demographic can both exalt achievements as "replay value" and of course, the pink elephant no one will come out and admit to... epeen... and simultaneously decry achievements as "hand holding" and "casual".

.... How are achievements the future? They don't actually DO anything to gameplay; a game heavily laden with achievements would still play the same without them. Hell, if you want you can make your own, like the challenges people write up for open ended games like The Sims. They're completely optional and in no way are the future.

Actually, I think achievements are more for casual gamers. Take a game like New Vegas, where you can actually look up the Achievements to see what all there is to look for. It essentially serves as a hand-holding guide to step players through the game, and then give little tiny encouragements of "Hey, buddy, you're doing a great job," before they ruffle your hair and send you to the next achievement.
Maybe so, although New Vegas is inherently a single player game while also the achievements that are implemented is straight forward as they are pretty much the same with FO3.

It also true that some individual achievements may be casual while some aren't. Its the collective amount that is really counted, calling a person with #,###,### (in accordance with different system ratios) achievement points a 'casual gamer' would be hard to justify even for me...unless s/he cheated.

This is the company that told us that real gamers didn't want online play, then gave us online play a few years later...

Yeah, it will play the same, but it will play longer.

People enjoy having goals and the sense of accomplishment is one a lot of us like to have.

You know why those guys that Nintendo is trying to "not follow" implemented achievements? Because a lot of people like them and the people who don't can easily ignore them.

It's a "win-win".

I agree, and I love the comment of 'when I complete the first level it feels like getting congratualated for putting on some pants', coz that's exactly what it feels like to me. I hate it when a game gives you achievements for watching the opening cutscene....that's just pointless.

I think that they don't want to release a Nintendo Achievement System because to do so they might actually have to sit down and think of something for once rather than Mass-Produce Party games with little effort.

And really the only thing worse than encouraging Gamers to sit (stand / wave their arms about like one of the Wiggles having a seizure) in-front of their TV for an empty sense of achievement, is encouraging Casuals to do the same. Their lives are clearly empty enough. =]

I see achievements/ trophies as the new alternative to the old 'high score' screens you see on arcade machines. A ranking system used now that those older days are more or less over with. I can see Nintendo's point though especially since trophies/ achievements don't do anything other than show what you've done in certain games (meaning they can't be exchanged for an actual reward)

Despite being something of an achievement hunter myself I still play Nintendo games. As was mentioned their games do have a similar system, on a game-by-game basis, for keeping track of how you play their games (like the trophies I've collected in Melee and, the Drivers License in MKW)

Now on to collect achievements on my latest rented game!!

I've never gotten this thing people have against achievements. Sure, there's really no tangible reward for getting them, but neither is there one for playing the game in the first place. Other then, you know, FUN.
