Nintendo Boss Admits Vitality Sensor Still Needs Work

The vitality sensor is full of potential, says Nintendo, it's just not ready for primetime yet.

It's been nearly two years since Nintendo announced the Wii Vitality Sensor, but it remains, as yet, unreleased. You could be forgiven for thinking that Nintendo had abandoned the project, but according to CEO Satoru Iwata, that isn't the case. Speaking to investors last month, he said that Nintendo is simply trying to perfect the peripheral before it releases it.

Iwata said that Nintendo could release the Vitality Sensor right now, and nearly everyone would feel comfortable with it. The problem was, he said, that if Nintendo did release it now, there'd be a few people - around one in five, by his estimate - who weren't comfortable. He said that Nintendo's goal was to get that number down to one in a hundred, and only then would it release it.

"This is a totally new type of entertainment," he said. "And there are large individual differences in the biological information of humans." Nevertheless, he felt that the project had "a lot of interesting potential," and said that Nintendo was hopeful that it would eventually bring the product to market. He was reluctant to try to put a time on when that might be, however.

Back in 2009, Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, defended [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93093-Nintendo-President-Defends-Wii-Vitality-Sensor] the Vitality Sensor, comparing it with other Wii peripherals that people didn't understand at first, and saying that Nintendo had software in the pipeline that would show off just what the sensor could do. Right now though, it seems like it doesn't even work as it's supposed to, and although Nintendo has a history of hardware innovation, even it may struggle to find the fun in a heart monitor.

I hate when I do that and not notice =|

I never knew this vitality sensor thingy existed, and it seems interesting.
Hopefully its not just another thing for the "awesome" fitness games that Nintendo seems to think are good.

I still cant picture anything entertaining to do with it, seriously i have no clue what the hell this could be used for apart from a trauma center game where you perform operations on actual people

Seriously. I'm not entertained by sticking things in electronic holes and having it be entertainment.

What the hell is the point of these things, what happened to just enjoying the damn game. Are we so bored as a gaming union that we need 100 peripherals to have fun? Knowing Nintendo the game will order you to do something, then measure your heartrate or something silly and give you some currency to spend.

Sigh.

I just don't see this catching on or ever seeing the light of day, whilst obviously there's potential in there for unique game experiences, especially in the survival horror genre, it's just not going to get support because the Wii is basically beginning to come to the end of its run.

I don't even think the wii controller is ready for prime time yet, I hear the motion plus works better, but its far from perfect still.

Surival horror is pretty much the only genre I can see something like this maybe improving, but even there it wouldn't be affected all that much. I mean, all it can really do is tell the game that the person isn't really that scared, so throw some more monsters at them (or, if they do it properly, like Amnesia, stop throwing monsters at them).

That, or maybe they want us to be able to control games by squeezing our fingers, blocking off circulation.

What's the point of this thing again? To waste money? Reminds me of that stupid peripheral for the YGO game on Wii that scans cards and you have to buy it seperately. Truely, that'll see plenty of use and be worth the money spent on it, just like this device.(sarcasam) ~.~

Wow, I wish my hands looked like that.

But I don't see this catching on; then again, I felt the same for the Kinect, yet that thing sold rapidly.

I'm struggling to find the entertainment in taking away my only analog stick and replacing it with a little thingy that checks my pulse. You need to have some damn interesting games for that thing to be worth anyone's time.

Well, if it actually manages to entertain 1 in 5 people I'll consider it the greatest innovation in gaming history, or humanity as gamers' greatest failure.

That looks a lot like what they use in hospitals to measure heart rate and blood oxygen levels. If they could sell it cheap enough, and if it were reliable enough, that could be kinda cool to have with Wii Fit as it could give you some metrics to work with and could help you reduce heart rate and all that.

If I used my Wii as gym equipment, I would be all over this. As it happens, I use my gaming console for gaming.

A horror game that procedurally generates its content and times its scares based on your heart-rate. Sign me up.

It will never exist.

Don't be so negative, this is the greatest idea Nintendo has implemented on any of their systems since the analog stick. Just think of the possibilities. You can get the same fun you can only get by spending the day in a hospital. If they make it do the beeping thing to tell you that you're still alive too that would just make it epic.

I can't wait until we get a piece of hardware that allows total immersion into hentai games. You're getting warmer, Nintendo!
