When I first saw this thread I thought the timeline mystery was going to be how the ocarina of time was stolen from Link at the begining of MM when Link gave it back to Zelda after OoT

Don't piss on the kid's chips yet, let him go to enormous lengths and fail, so, so hard...

Of course, if Nintendo DID say there was a timeline, then there wouldn't be as much of a hunt to make a timeline, because there isn't the possibility that there isn't one.

The speculation gets a lot of fans to buy the games, so of course Nintendo doesn't simply say that "Yeah, he's right." That would remove the idea of speculation altogether, and lose that thrill of discovery in the Zelda games. By saying that there isn't, it makes some fans go "Oh yeah? I'll prove them wrong." Even if there isn't, they won't willingly discard a big selling point of their franchise.

I don't like ocarinahero, because I disagree with his theory and his attitude. I'm pretty sure that email was an automatic response, so when I first saw this, I just ignored Nintendo's response.

Really, the fan timeline idea's are nice and all, but I come up with two theories, one of which I myself don't believe much at all. One idea, is that all of these games take place in a strange world were they are nothing but stories that people tell, hence a Legend of Zelda. I don't really know about that, that's the one I laugh at. As for the second idea; they're just games. Each was made up as Nintendo went along, they not made to go together. I doubt the story was thought out that far ahead. I mean, I really doubt that Nintendo was thinking about twilight princess when they were making the original Legend of Zelda for the NES. Really there might be a solid timeline, but right now, until Nintendo say's that there is one, and details it, (like with what happened with Metroid) I won't be saying what is, or isn't true.

I always knew they were different Link's, but I thought there was some continuity. I thought it went, Ocarina, Majora, Twilight Princess and then Wind Waker. Hm...that's weird.

Well, his theory makes a whole lot of sense, and is very well explained. I think it was a cop-out on Nintendo's part to just up and say Oh, BTW, there is no spoon... timeline.

I never really thought there was any set continuity, I always thought they made the games so that they could fit into an overarching story by use of subtle hints, for example Minish Cap could reasonably be placed first since it shows the inception of the tradition of green-cap wearing.

It's certainly not unreasonable to fit all the games into a coherent (if complex) story, even if Nintendo never intended it that way. After all, why bother hiring more writers when you can just let the fans do it for you?

Wait...I vaguely remember something in Wind Waker referencing the Hero of Time which is ocarina link. The Link in wind waker is supposed to be the reincarnation(sp?) of the Hero of Time but it's technically not the same Link, physically speaking. That and wasn't it a fact that Wind Waker takes place so long after Ocarina that Hyrule became flooded and is actually the sea the game takes place in? Ala Wind Waker takes place waaay after Ocarina of Time.

Please correct me if I'm wrong because it's been a while lol.

Wait. They have been saying there was a time line...but now there isn't?

...But Skull Kid in Majora's Mask flat out said that he remembered Link from Ocarina of Time...and...Wind Waker had many connections to Hyrule and it seemed there was some sort of continuity going...

Look I know it isn't cool to say this but I am a little upset. Nintendo could have just went the vague, "Ehhh...maybe." because it really does dash the imagination when playing a Zelda title knowing that Link isn't doing anything of great consequence. Hyrule will be fine by the next Zelda game apparently.

I never cared much for the timeline of The Legend of Zelda, though I always did treat every game like it's own game instead of an on-going series. It's like Final Fantasy or Fire Emblem, unless stated otherwise, they're all different from each other.

I think the only two that could be linked are OoT and Majora's Mask, as they take place in seperate worlds and seem to follow each other.

("Could be linked?" Hehehehe.)
I always thought that Majoras mask was the only one with the same Link as another game. I thought that the Link in Majoras Mask was meant to be the same Link from Ocarina of Time cos all the others talk about the Hero of Time in past tense in the opening cutscene but this one doesn't.

p.s. i like ur avatar. Flight of the Conchords is fuckin awesome!!!

I seem to remember that through the ages, it was a new Link every time (unless specified in the game). I heard this YEARS ago. Jeez, could be about the time of Majoras' Mask. Maybe even before that. Until I heard that, part of me always wanted to weave the games into a timeline. Then, upon hearing that a new Link meant a new era, I stopped wanting to establish timelines.

To tell the creators that something of their design is hogwash, and try to fight it is bold. I think in this case, it's also a waste.

So, in a conduluted and odd way of thinking, Legend of Zelda is like Final Fantasy; different worlds, big amount of simularities.

The video was pretty amusing but, I digress, this is silly and we should just enjoy the games. I can't believe people have spent so much energy discussing this matter.

Ah well, can't say I haven't had lengthy discussions concerning video games before.

Good luck with the petition...?

I never even knew that there was supposedly a timeline. I just assumed that through each universe Link "The hero in the green cap" was a different person.
Still, you don't exactly tell the writers what to do with their story o_O
