Nintendo NX: What have you heard?

The last Nintendo console that was an absolute winner to me was the SNES. Don't get me wrong, there are positive things to write about N64, Gamecube, Wii and Wii U and I've owned them all. But they were always in addition to my real gaming machines.

What will it take for the NX to be my main gaming console next generation?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo#Nintendo_NX

Mobile devices (my Samsung S7) is really too small for me to enjoy gaming. I hope it is not a marriage between console and tablet or cell phone.

That leaves VR as a way to make this thing stand out. But the link above states only that they are researching VR.

Your thoughts? What credible things have you heard about the NX?

Only that it will be an hybrid of home console and portable console (portable in the sense that you can play games away from home, unlike the Wii U), and that it will have the new Zelda. That's all. Everything else I heard has been mostly rumors and speculations.

What CaitSeith said. A portable/home console hybrid. My guesses include some type of dock that adds additional processing for HD for TV and probably 720p controller touchscreen.

Also it's pretty credible that it will use cartridges. My guess is something like large SD cards or DS/3DS cards. Given the price/size of SD cards nowadays, it's unlike the N64 days, and you can fit blue-ray sized memory in the size of the hole of the disc needs to be read and less than probably $10 wholesale.

There have been a lot of rumors based off of 2 patents Nintendo filed.
1). A controller where the entire non-button/stick surface is a screen (which someone pulled off a really convincing fake prototype for as well).
2). The other for a Wii U gamepad-like device that has wii-motes that attach/detach to the sides.
Of the two, #2 seems more reasonable as a direction that makes sense.

I heard they were researching VR as well, and that's it on that front.
I've heard Nintendo is moving away from Power PC and onto x86 (like xbox and sony).*not sure how credible.
Also read that a fair number of 3rd parties are working on titles for it.

Basically nothing. All we really have is rumors. I feel Nintendo is relying more on their name to sell the system than the system. Which is not a winning strategy. Only the Nintendo hardcore will buy it regardless of details.

Heard nothing either. And what you described just now Saltyk is what Nintendo has been doing since Wii and Wii U. That is why the Wii U is failing. Say what you will about the Dreamcast, but at least Sega went out on a high note with their last console. It looks like the Wii U is going to end with a thud.

That it can knock out a bodybuilding sperm whale just by thinking about flicking the creature's nose.

That it can breakdance in the cold dead vacuum of space.

That it will resurrect your dead house pets without them turning homicidal in future.

That it can violently consume all your other gaming platforms in one course whilst you go for a pee, increasing it's power tenfold with each victim.

That it can cry for you during a breakup AND pay for the bottles of whisky to drown your sorrows whilst it comforts you in its warm, loving embrace.

Umm, they are still not confirmed and I'm not certain of their accuracy, but that's all I got. Sorry!

Even if that would happen to actually be true, the online would probably still suck. XD

I've heard that if you say 'NX' 3 times in front of a mirror at night, Nintendo shows up at your door and tells you it's gonna be great.

I heard it's going to be great, that it's innovative, that it will (possibly) have games and some buzzwords that are recycled from every single mareting campaign from the dawn of time. Oh, and also that they're not going to bive vague information about what it's going to be so consumers won't be confused.

Oh, but seriously, I have heard it's going to be released next eyar (first half) and that it will be a portable-home console hybrid and that it will use cartidges (anything else would be stupid on a portable console).

The Nintendo NX is a console. It is expected sometime early-mid 2017. There will be games for it. Most likely there will be a Mario game for it. It will connect to your TV so that you can use the console. It will have specs of some kind. Nintendo may or may not support 3rd party development for this console. Apparently there are developers already working on games for it.

That is all.

It worked for the New 3DS and it has no original games. All the New 3DS got was ports. This hardware was a bigger appointment then the Wii U.

- You compare the Dreamcast and Wii U and say how atleast Sega went out on a high note with their last console. The Wii U isn't Nintendo's last console.

- I think most of the Dreamcast love came after it was finished. If not Sega was foolish to get out of the console game.

I never said it was, just noting the similarities. My point is that Wii U, really does not have that many good games; especially outside of first party titles. Aside from some digital games, there is nothing else. I got all the games I wanted on the console, but I keep my system around, because I enjoy I bought. Also, there is no way in hell I am getting rid of Bayonetta 2.

I don't know what the last game on the Wii U will be, but everyone knows the list of games have been getting smaller and smaller. It's almost like situation with the Sega Saturn right now. Honestly, I am not even excited for the NX, even if I knew the info for it.

One thing i heard would be that it could be a single console and something that just connects to a Dock, on one hand, the use of modular hardware could be pretty amazing, but the downside is that Nintendo could have an issue with a convergent System-Handheld system that the entire idea of digital licenses could be undermined.

Like if someone had a 3DS and plugged it onto a NX (not to say that it does), and enabled them to use a larger screen, that would be OK. but if say, the 3DS were a generic unit and the NX still functioned without it, suddenly you have 2 users in 2 different places*. calling additional units the NX [Name] might confuse people into thinking its some sort of non-vital spinoff like people did with the Gamepad for the Wii U.

In Nintendo's case, an entire family buying games would spread the cost between them, but the amount of console sales wouldn't necessarily budge in comparison to the amount of total games bought, what would happen if someone robbed the detachable part, would Nintendo even upgrade its account system by the time the NX comes out? 1m consoles to 2m games would mean 1-2 games were bought each, if it was 1m to 10m then that would imply a large audience of families but not necessarily a source of software sales, if it was more like 7m consoles then they could at least guarantee a healthy online and physical market.

Or maybe Nintendo would take a leaf from the Vita and allow people to use their mobile phones as one of many ways of a substitute Gamepad, or something that developers could use for immersive reasons. alternately if Nintendo released a marketplace that people can download a shell app on Google Play/App Store, maybe they can tunnel an image onto the NX's TV or link accounts to pool their digital licenses easier as well as piggyback on Google Drive's storage for cloud-based data. get the feeling that Nintendo is going to connect some of their ventures together to strengthen their brand, if someone was into Super Mario Run and bought a few NES games from a official non-main VC service and had discounts on the NX, that could mean more console gamers/sales for them.

* I'm not talking about people who might have VC games, since they're kind of old enougth to get a free pass, but i mean other companies games and more modern stuff. like if there were a Yokai Watch 4 (not real) and there were 2 People playing the game seperately at the same time with their own save files...and buying it once, then that's a net loss of 1 potential sale. or if some games were indirectly compatible and portforwarded with playing in mind, would Platinum Games mind that there are families sharing 1 copy of Bayonetta 2? obviously Steam already does this with the whole Family sharing thing and Nintendo could think things though, but still though, it's an interesting thought.

I don't think that is entirely accurate. I'd say Nintendo is relying on gimmicks to help distinguish them from their competition. The Wii had motion controls and the Wii U a built in tablet. It seems they wanted to be different from the others and thought it would make up for inferior hardware (apparently taking the wrong lessons from the Gamecube). The Wii was a success in terms of units sold. But it seems software sales were always a problem (unless it was a Nintendo game). Thus far I would say the biggest problems for the Wii U were bad advertisement and naming.

Though, they certainly do expect the Nintendo hardcore to buy regardless. I know people who seem they will buy it regardless.

Hmmm. OK. But what I'm mostly excited about it is that, from what I've heard, it will, in fact, allow you to tug on Superman's cape.

Ah me. So, this is going to be some kind of mobile thing. We will see.
