I remember reading an article, probably here on the escapist, that was arguing that nintendo would probably move to being specialised in only hand held gaming systems and with the new wiiU do you guys think this is a way for nintendo to kinda shift or merge its way to being a handheld only company?

Not really, I just see this as them using the resources they have to burrow their way deeper into the console pie. They made it kinda clear that this was in no way an attempt to be a handheld.

Nope. I don't really understand OP's point of view. It's just a controller not a handheld system.

That's what I thought but I haven't been keeping a close eye on the Wii news, the last Nintendo console I owned was an NES.

If the controller also doubled as a stand-alone gaming device that would be quite cool, and I may agree with the idea the OP brought up.

Now that I think about it that actually would be pretty damn awesome.

Yeah, and I think it would be more accepted as a controller then as well - right now it just seems awkward and overly dressed up.

No, but it seems a lot of developers are moving towards handhelds. It might be pretty cool as developers will have to work with less resources. Trim the fat, maybe. They're even releasing a new Megaman Legends on the 3DS.

No, I think it's Nintendo's attempt to embrace this new era of tablet based gaming.
Except it isn't.
Care to elaborate on that?
It does things tablets cannot is why.
I really shouldn't have to fully explain the obvious.
Just because somethign employs the same technology doesn't mean it's the same thing.
It would be like saying all things that have touch screens are like Ds's when we obviously know it's false. It's a technology they have ALREADY been using they are not embracing anything but themselves. It's how it interacts that is important not what it's made of or looks like, but how it's used and designed and you cannot say something based on so little info. True it has casual things, but what doesn't anymore? Everyone is trying to get at it look at Kinect and the ps3's...I forgot.Anyway I hope you got my point at least partially as this is the summary.

It seems to me like they took the two screen idea of the DS and made it bigger and less portable

Ok first of all I was merely speculating when I said that. Also my speculation wasn't purely based purely on the fact that they threw a touchscreen into the controller. I was basing it on the fact that the overall design of the controller appears to be rather tablet-like as well as including a touchscreen, and a number of the functions shown in the demo seemed, to me at least, to be meant to adapt to the shift towards tablet based gaming. Besides, it would make sense, what with said shift towards tablet-based gaming and all. Those who do not adapt get left behind after all. But this is all just speculation on my part.
