Nintendo VR May Stay As A Rumor

A lot of places on the web have been jumping at the speculation bandwagon for Nintendo's newest console plan, and that usually follows with a lot of "sources" speaking out to tell us all about it. If you recall, the NX controller was apparently "leaked" and was revealed to the public, based on the design schematic images posted previously. As we soon found out, it was proven completely false.

We now find ourselves running the rumor mill at high speeds with another idea. The NX production will be delayed in order to add VR to keep up with the current market trend. Not a bad rumor, makes sense, no? The thing that makes me skeptical is the source. DigiTimes was the original creator of the rumor article [http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20160530PD201.html], upon looking at it again, it doesn't sound right. It's pretty vague on where the information came from, but that could very well be commonplace. What interests me is this...

This article was made to fact check DigiTime's previous rumor based articles [http://techland.time.com/2012/05/14/digitimes-apple-rumors/], and came up with a striking amount of false rumors and and incorrect speculations based on their "sources." And if you read every article they cited, there's a lot of these articles.

So what's the point I'm trying to make? Simply put, if Nintendo wanted to make a system that was affordable for its demographic, as well as have a have a mobile component... I can't imagine that it would ever support VR. VR goes against both design decisions Nintendo has firmly stated with the NX. Not to mention DigiTime's track record for these sorts of things looks flimsy at best. We don't know what the NX will hold for now, but for the time being, it might be best to look at the source closely and decide for ourselves if it should be trusted.

I didn't buy into it in the first place, but that track record is pretty damning. I'm not sure what to think, so we should wait until Nintendo reveals some info later this year

Well, VR is "out" now, but aside from the week when the occulus and the vive came out, I haven't heard about them, like at all. It might be a bit early to call whether its a success or a failure, but I feel like its a pretty good indication that you don't need VR to keep up with current trend and it'll at most be a niche feature.

On top of that, making a portable gaming console that can run a VR headset is not an easy task (and it would make it really expensive), and the rumor that the NX is a portable is far stronger than it having VR.

I would need very strong proof to believe anything.

I think it's a fairly safe bet at this point that either DigiTimes is deliberately making shit up, or they know damn well their sources are making shit up and they're just posting it for the clicks.

well its always going to stay as a rumour until nintendo decides to actually make it. personally I wish they would just make a console with good specs and just make some games for it.

I don't think it will be a viable reality. The current rumour has the NX being mobile centered, which would not work out well with a VR headset.

The NX will have VR, 4k graphics, backwards compatibility with every console, cross play compatibility with Playstation and Xbox AND it will support every single controller that's ever been made.

My dad works for Nintendo and said so.

Well then, when the NX comes out, if it doesn't allow me to use my old Xbox 'duke' controllers, I'll know whose knee caps to break. ;)

Yeah... I don't think Nintendo really has the technical expertise/resources to pull that off. Not unless they've completely changed their approach to technical/software design and hired some remarkably brilliant new engineers. And that's not to mention Nintendo's aging game design philosophy and likely rather fragile finances.
