I feel like this needs a second source before people start proclaiming Nintendo is the devil
Good thing people in this thread are questioning the logic behind it, along with apparently the fact that they've stopped printing Pikmin 3 copies, than actually calling them evil. >.>
Seriously. I mean logic dictates that if you ran out this early in the role out there is a giant demand to be met. Probably bigger than you were expecting. Basically meaning its time to make more so they can has all the money. Actually as far as I'm concerned this is good news. It means the amiibos are doing better than I thought they would. With better implementation in future games they might've just hit their next jackpot.

It's entirely possible some of them may be "discontinued" in the sense that they won't send out more to specific retailers. Retailers only have space for a limited amount of stock so they will likely rotate out what they send to retailers to avoid the issue of stocks of old characters meaning stores won't order new ones.

They might end up selling the "older" ones via the web store.

Don't forget they did say a while ago that stocks would be limited and they would be collectors items, they will just make new ones related to different games (i think Mario kart related ones are on the cards)

Almost as if posting negative stories based on a single piece of evidence is a bad thing cause it turns out a lot of the time to be scaremongering bollocks :p

Shame this happens with Nintendo related stuff a lot :/

Christmas presents? Fuck that! I don't even have a WiiU nor plan on getting one but actually kinda want the Kirby and Donkey Kong ones. Always impulse buy, NO REGRETS! NO REFUNDS!

Okay, but the important question is where the heck is my Bowser Jr. and Duckhunt Amiibos. Those are the only ones I want.

So this turned out to be false? It's almost like taking the word of a retailer with two outlets isn't worth anything.

Basically it's mail-order video games that cost as much as walking into the average retail store.
Actually it isn't.

Its a small retailer. But quite popular and they do know their stuff. I would imagine its miscommunication between them and their supplier.

I do know for a fact that Amazon has already started cancelling pre-orders of the 3 suspected rare Amiibos from wave 2. And the person whose pre-order was cancelled, ordered them before wave 1 was out.

Either way, in the Toronto area I have yet to see any of these characters available at retail and I've looked through 15 to 20 stores. I'm considering returning the others as I don't really want a collection I can only complete via eBay.

Finally, these toys are like Skylanders in that they come in boxes. The boxes contain characters but which ones you get as a store are unknown till you open it. The screencap Erini posted mentions that stores need to reorder once they sell through. What store is going to re-order when they have dozens of the common amiibos in stock and none of the rare ones? It's like Nintendo are treating retailers like a kid buying baseball card packs (or MTG for the more nerdy audience) and the stores don't want to keep buying because they in turn get stuck with a lot of Donkey Kongs and Marios that they're never going to sell. Same thing happened at many retailers with the Skylanders.

That's the scary part of stuff like this. Cheap but quality looking figures widely available. I'd be a liar if I said I never once considered just grabbing the Anna and Elsa Disney Infinity dual pack, even though I don't even own the game, just because I'm a Frozen fan and wanted those figures. I haven't got them yet......there's still time though.

DUDE I don't even like having game stuff and I want these for some reason, that's how much I like them.

Capthcha: Nutrition. Yes captcha, these figures MUST be really nutritious.

Regarding update 3, what the hell is going on with Nintendo?

First they say one thing, then they something different. It's like Nintendo itself doesn't even know what the hell is going on with these things.

Best Guess Until Clarified:

Yes, Nintendo will eventually discontinue less popular Amiibo. Just like every single toy maker ever. Hell, even the popular ones will eventually stop, in some far flung tomorrow.

But as of right-this-very-second, Nintendo hasn't pulled the plug on Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Marth.

Though, I must ask if they were short packed, because I haven't seen a single one yet.

I think Nintendo is not discontinuing the amiibos the stores are just going to stop stocking the less popular one. Jim Sterlings video is very timely actually check that out if I failed to explain it. here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15zR-ZmTWE0&list=UUWCw2Sd7RlYJ2yuNVHDWNOA

Wait, aren't these supposed to be this extremely, heavily marketed thing along with the Wii U?

Why would you suddenly discontinue them?
They wouldn't, they just misinform to boost their sales.

Nothing, really. Ask instead what happened at The Escapist. This probably should never have been an article, nevermind an article updated three times, but they posted it right away before getting feedback and clarification from Nintendo. In the end, the article is almost entirely rolled back, leaving nothing but the absolutely ordinary: popular figures temporarily sold out, less popular figures will eventually be discontinued. Nothing to see there at all.

Pretty much, I would put more blame on the retailer that claimed they were discontinued for causing this confusion. Alas this is the internet, jumping to conclusions is like a national past time here.

This video has sod all to do with it, and has no bearing on the situation at all.

Just a load of rubbish about captain rainbow (a game that from what I have read about, would be banned from stores by these moral crusaders based on its content) to try to wave away the fact that he was wrong about moral crusaders aiming to remove certain types of games from sale :p

The situation is basically what i wrote further up (before the 3rd update), they know stores have limited space so they won't have all of them out at once, have a core few and others that rotate!

Considering how much of the software has been updated to be amiibo-friendly, it would be weird for Nintendo to discontinue any of them so soon. The Amiibo initiative was an investment for Nintendo, and as such will have a longer payoff.

To anyone who didn't take this article with a hefty block of salt, perhaps play chess, or other games that involve thinking a few moves ahead. And the next update is going to be that Nintendo stating that they aren't discontinuing anything, and if another store says something about shipment issues, I imagine the issue will have to do not with the product itself being discontinued, but perhaps being on a delay because of some sort of slight change they're making and hoping no one notices before the next shipment goes to retailers.
