Now for those who don't know what the Nintendo World Championship is, it was a Country-wide competition of the Nintendo game, of the same name, in 1990. Loosely based on the movie The Wizard, the contest was to complete certain tasks for 3 Nintendo games (in one cartridge) in under 6 minutes. Winners got Mario Trophies, US Saving Bonds, trips to Universal Studio and Nintendo Related products. The Nintendo World Championship was a one time event, and the Cartridges associated with the even (especially the golden ones) have sky-rocketed in valuability.

For 2015, Nintendo is holding a brand new World Championship tournament. Reggie Fils-Aimes is also entering the tournament (at least that's what the video claims). However, not much detail is given on what exactly this new NWC will be like, though the odds are great it will be more of a standard game tournament instead of a short Challange.

I think this is interesting. If it ever comes near Huntsville I might try to participate.

Discuss!

Gaming is a very different landscape now with many different tournaments for many different titles and genres. I struggle to see how Nintendo is going to get people excited for a Nintendo world Championship. What games are they gonna have Smash? Mario Kart? is that the theme a few high profile games of theirs that have caught the competitive scene despite lack of support in that regards from Nintendo for most of their existence?

I cant see people caring about a format like the old one much anymore. Need more details before I can personally decide if it interests me but I dunno it just seems an odd thing for them to do. I think it will have to be something pretty special or offer a lot of money to make people care in any way.

If that's the case then why was the Smash Invitational last year so well received? You're comparing this to EVO, when really this is just going to be a bit of fun before E3 starts. Not everything has to be a super-serious MOBA or Fighting Game tournament where highly skilled 'professionals' go up against each other in heated matches, and I think this will attract the crowd who are put off the hyper-competitiveness of the current e-sports scene.

[EDIT]Oh, and as for the games they'll be putting into it. They've said that there will be a game from each generation, and it will almost definitely be in the format used in the original NWC where each player plays a short section of each game to get points.

Sounds like fun; the SSB tournament last year did quite well and bringing back the NWC is a neat way to do something different from last year.

Well, the movie also revealed the first time Super Mario Bros. 3 to the west, so here's hoping that Nintendo makes a surprise similar to that at this event.

Or the finals will just be a super tough custom made SMB level made by Miyamoto using Mario Maker.

You are misunderstanding me I am not saying Nintendo doesnt have competitive games I am saying the competitive games they have already have their own tournaments and for years have received no help from Nintendo and in some cases have actually clashed with them at least in regards to Smash anyway as I have no idea about competitive Mario Kart other than knowing it exists.

But you say it will follow the old format. That does not sound very exciting tbh sounds more like an extended Mario Party game. Then again if its a one off like last time it may be entertaining enough but cant see it having any longevity or frankly even as much pull as it did in 1990. Nintendo were the bees knees as far as gamers were concerned back then, now its not the case.
