Did they just replace action/adventure with pure action? And it's no longer an FPS or side-view 2D shooter? Plus Samus talks, and the subtlety is replaced with what looks like some kind of galactic war? Excuse me while I sit in the corner and cry for a minute.
EDIT: Now that I have that out of my system...
I am very skeptical. I will go ahead and state that the Prime trilogy is my favorite of the series. The change in developers to Team Ninja already shows signs.
MP3 introduced cut sceans (though they were really "press A" dialouge boxes) and voice acting. Though different, it somehow stayed within the Metroid feel. Now only were these moments rare and subtle, but they did not add drama, or state a very complex story. Most of the Metroid story is told though the enviornment and logs. this game is replacing that with standard story telling methods. Lots of talking, and lots of cut sceans.
MP3 also added the concept of a major Federation force. Other Metroid games featured them from time to time, but they were never a core component like in MP3. While present, the usage of the Federation was greatly timed and did not overshadow the solo gameplay. OM looks like they will be just as common and powerful as police in GTA.
Giving a silent character a voice when they have been mute for ages is never a good idea.
The first person perspective was perfect for Metroid. Even though the 2D games are not first person, the camera was always largly focused on Samus and not the actions around her. This replaces intensity with stylised action.
Speaking of the third-person perspective, the general gameplay is also getting a possibly bad change. This looks like Ninja Gaiden with different models, and I have never been a Ninja Gaiden fan.
I miss Retro Studios. While the 2D games are still good, the 3D games (including Hunters) felt like Metroid was built for that and not 2D. The Prime trilogy was a great change. Now that Retro is gone, we get Team Ninja, a studio I have never liked. Replacing subtlety with stylised action. Replacing intense feelings with Hollywood feelings. Removing solo story telling with true cut sceans and drama. Not that I hate the cut sceans from past Metroid games, because all they did was show bosses emerge and die. If Nintendo keeps a tight leash on team Ninja, I may keep some hope for this game. However, with the prime trilogy, I started recognizing Metroid with Retro rather then Nintendo. I would prefer if Retro was continuing the series. But I guess if Nintendo were the original creators, it should be fine. Just not as good as the Prime games.
