However, on topic this strikes me as a very stupid move as peer-to-peer matchplay services wouldn't really work for this sort of game...though the lack of LAN play may just be a space-saving measure.
by that logic consoles have equal reason to be phased out themselves.

They hsould include an optional free DLC patch that gives LAN for those who want it.

I do not understand any reason for removing the dedicated server or lan support. They do not have to supply a dedicated server but at least make it so that we can make one if we so choose.

Well officially thats C&C4 off my want list. Half the fun was Lan'ing C&C.

Congratulations EA, You've joined the blacklist.

Thier way of saying "The C&C franchise has been dying for a long time now, and if this game bombs then we will be able to kill it witihin a year"

I'm not sure I understand the point of dedicated servers for RTS games. I'm used to the Battle.net style of RTS were once your eliminated you lose and exit the game and join another. Someone care to explain this confusion?

Given that there won't be a console version (to start with anyway) of this last installment of one of my most favorite gaming series, the lack of LAN support is more annoying than the lack of dedicated servers (local internet speeds (UK Channel Islands) suck, so playing any game where gameplay is severely affected if there is any lag is a no-no for me).

however, I don't wholly buy the reason as being you can't track unlocks and accolades properly. MW2 actually allows you to level up and unlock things offline with system link (on 360 anyway) and you can also use your online profile in a system link game, with the stats just updated when you boot up your profile. That being the case, surely EA can support the same thing for LAN gaming, where stats and unlocks are just temp stored until they can be uploaded to the servers?

Still, the flipside of the coin is the dedicated server community is vastly outweighed by the population of PC gamers that don't know/don't care, so from a fiscal sense, concentrating on just one option is probably a lot cheaper (and means mods and tweaks can be tighter regulated, probably charged for too). True, dedicated server supporters may be more vocal than those that don't really mind, but when you are a company like EA, where you make much more money out of games like Sims than you'll ever make out of a C&C game, it isn't too hard to see why they would cut whatever corners they can and keep their property on a tighter leash.
-OR-
they could get the RPG elements THE FUCK OUT OF MY RTS!
that'd be cool.

Uh, when did RTS multiplayer ever use dedicated servers? Maybe I just didn't play them enough, but it was always player hosted.

This pretty much. I can't think of any RTS's that use dedicated servers.

DRM, no LAN/dedicated servers, half the game left out so more DLC can be sold...
Isn't the games industry great?
OT: If they have a reason for it, then great. Truthfully I'm not a huge fan of ded. servers and LAN, being brought up on console multiplayer, Blizzard, and MMOs. And seeing how TF2 and CSS work, where you can't easily find a game, I think I prefer the developers running servers that make finding a game easy. However, I don't see why you can't have both.

Command And Conquer died along with Westwood, but the ever-disappearing LAN/dedicated server support in newer games is disturbing. I don't want LAN parties to go away. :(
No kidding. What happened to the LAN party love? They probably blame it for piracy woes :p

"if you go to another machine - friend's house, Internet café - whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you've unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can't really do dedicated servers with that."

Yeaaaaahh... no one really cares all that much about that. And even if you wanted to include that there is no reason any of those features should exclude Dedicated Servers or LAN, I mean Steam can do all that and still integrates perfectly with dedicated servers.

If they just said the REAL reasons why they are removing these features (that they want to control our online experience more) then I'd accept that and know to keep away. Bullshit excuses are worse than no explanation at all.

I mean the least they could do is offer company servers with a fee to access them which justifies their running/renting cost. But even that is cheapskate, spend money to make money, you try and cut down the experience people are going to move elsewhere, it's not like C&C is the only RTS franchise around.

But to be honest I don't care all that much, C&C has been a pretty lack-luster franchise recently, if they want to hammer the last nail into their own coffin I'll be more than happy to help shovel on the dirt.

PC gamers need to get it through their collectively thick heads - developers are dropping dedicated server support because it is becoming prohibitively expensive. Now while I can understand a slight bit of rage at not being able to pay for and host your own dedicated servers, you cannot honestly believe EA, IW, EPIC or anyone else owes you free dedicated servers now can you?

I normally like changes in gaming... but this is one change I can't get behind. I really hate the lack of dedicated servers and there is no legitimate reason why they should take them out.

I can't imagine that the logical step should be to phase out PC gaming if for no other reason than playing an RTS on a console is not very enjoyable. Mercifully my exposure to a console RTS is limited to a handful of games at best, and the control scheme is incredibly awkward.
