If all the idiots out there would stop buying these games that don't have LAN and dedicated servers, the devs and publishers would put that function back in. As it is, they don't have any reason to provide it.

Yikes, a good excuse not to buy the game.

RTS games have long been a staple of LAN parties, in fact from what I've seen in some cases it's the only reason they're bought. Nothing quite like an RTS or FPS game being played in a room with fifty PCs networked together, the players shouting at their opponents across a table filled with computer towers, cables and power boards stretched to capacity.

It's like the developers have forgotten their roots. Their nerdy, nerdy roots.

I thought RTS games were always peer hosted anyways ?

I cant imagine a RTS game that had dedicated servers, lobbies yes but not servers to host the matches played.

Wonder if this is a professional bit of trolling by The Escapist to spark off outrage and controversy?
Brings in the readers and gets 'em all riled up.

Dedicated servers on FPS is a must, least I think so and all the MP games that have a long lifetime have had dedicated server tools passed to the fans who set up communities, who keep the franchise alive...even for years after release (see CS, HL, UT, TF).
One must ask though if the lack of dedicated servers is due to the fans keeping a release viable for so long.
If you consider the new trend of pumping out sequels, having to compete with an older but popular product is not good for business.

... and that my friends is the bottom line, its a business.
They make products and we are consumers, nowt else.

Yeah, whatever, EA. I'm not going to buy it anyway. I haven't bought a C&C game since I saw the screenshots of the nod vehicles in C&C 3. Hated them. And the conehead infanty. And the zone trooper design.

Do what you want with it.

Lead designer Sam Bass said that the features had to be sacrificed in order to implement some of the game's features: "if you go to another machine - friend's house, Internet café - whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you've unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can't really do dedicated servers with that."
So what he is basically sayin because of their unlockables, they can't have dedicated servers? Why have unlockables then? Sure they can be fun if it was minor things such as skins or something minor. But this implies that it will be once again that old weapons and equipment unlock which I have begun to hate. It makes the game so unbalanced unless you buy the game and start playing near release date otherwise when you start everyone is going to be much better on equipment alone.

"Oh my god, we are bleeding!!! What can we do about this?! Oh yes, let's make the gamer-owned game our own property! And while we are at it, let's also prohibit him from playing the game the way he wants it! Oh my god, I am so genius! I'll be so rich!"

Goodbye Game Industry. It was hilarious watching you drown.

I like to be able to chose what games i play not have some broken ass matchmaker do it for me :p Granted ranked games have always been matchmade XD but whatever. C&C is one game i don't care about dedicated servers.

And I can already hear the boycotters FREAKING OUT!!
Oh, I don't think this is even one where a boycott is needed. This has just made it an unsatisfactory product.

Uh, when did RTS multiplayer ever use dedicated servers? Maybe I just didn't play them enough, but it was always player hosted.
Never, they never used ded servers. And I doubt they ever will.

Who's gunna run an expensive ded server for a 2 - 4 player game(on average)? Its a waste of money for such a small player count. And won't add anything helpful.

The only 'rts' that has ever used dedicated servers was World in conflict, and that was because it could actually have a fair number of players in one game.

The ones run by blizzard are the exception. But remember that community's cannot run their own warcraft 3 ded servers. They only exist for battle.net's ranked system. And I wouldn't be bunching them up with the Counterstrike-like servers most people think of when they mention dedicated servers.

And how did they sacrifice ded servers? no CnC game has EVER had ded servers. Load of nonsense.

The stuff about LAN however is BS. Whats the point of getting a group of friends together to play ever the internet? We had might as well have all stayed at our respective homes and played it.

OK. Dedicated servers I can live without. BUT LAN!!! Oh, come on publishers. As stated in a previous thread: I do not yet have high speed broadband. I'm stuck with dial-up and at the moment, lan is the only way I can participate in any form of multiplayer.

To be honest C&C has never had good matchmaking anyway, LAN is what carried it for me and everyone I know. I've already swapped my preorder to Battlefield:BC2 unrelated game, but screw it I can wait for Starcraft.

some of my best memories are sitting aroung playing C&C against my mates listening for the immortal words "A-Bomb prepping... A-Bomb launch detected"

All the collective bile, hatred and "If only people weren't so stupid, buying COD etc" is just annoying to me. It's EA choice, and If they want to shoot themselves in the foot then so be it. But people will still buy this game, as the laughable COD boycott showed, and left 4 dead, for that matter. And whilst COD is now just another unpleasent memory, Valve still delivered, and are providing DLC for both games, not just the new one.

All I'm saying is, Have a little faith that EA, who personally I think have been improving their act, will find a work around if needed. Failing that there is always piracy...
