ITT: People forget that DLC used to be called Expansion Packs

5 bucks for crappy content, 35 bucks for an expansion pack that is almost as long as the original game itself.

Say what?!

I have bought TONS of DLC after price drops, from the GTAIV episodes, to Undead Nightmare, the expansions for Borderlands...
You explained it to yourself.

Calling a tail a leg does not make it a leg. With GTA IV you would be buying the equivalent to a full game.

It's usually the small "booster pack"-size DLC that doesn't seem to drop price frequently.

From where and was it during a sale? I just looked up the Borderlands DLC and they're all at $10(special at $30 for all of them). Edit: And just to note, $10 was their initial release price too.

What's $5 in pounds sterling? Like £2.50? IDK
Currenly £2.38!

Some DLC is overpriced (skins, weapon packs) I agree, but The Shadow Broker DLC for ME2? Worth it, Broken Steel for FO3? Worth it.

The age old argument "If you don't want it, don't buy it!" applies here, you want the DLC you'll stump up the cash, and if you don't, go spend your money on something else!

Disagree.

I am happy to pay for quality.
I agree with this, and the developers have the right to price however they want.

I don't mind paying 10$ for a good DLC pack that leaves me satisfied.

They're at ?20 for all of them on the Playstation Network. And they do in fact drop in price. There's a section called "Price Drops" that is updated weekly as the DLC's get cheaper.

Kahuna burger is the smartest burger! if people don't like it they won't buy it. If people aren't buying it they will try new things to make you buy it, like say lowering the price.

That depends on the size of the DLC. If the DLC is a proper expansion like Shivering Isles for Oblivion, I am willing to pay a lot more than $5. Especially since Shivering Isles was better than the core game. I truly hope Skyrim's DLC is better than Skyrim. Because that would mean it's god-made since Skyrim alone is awesome!
SI was an expansion pack, and one of the last of its kind. DLC is basically a dev-published mod that adds a few missions in a fairly small area, some new skins/units, etc, and by definition, only downloadable. SI you could get retail and was pretty damn big.

I think the FO DLCs are quite worth its price. Now Bioware on the other hand, charges me 4 bucks for an alternate costume?

Captcha: I'm blushing. Really.

Bare in mind some DLC give access to content that makes it seem like an entirely new game.

I played Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare and not only did I play it for probably longer then I did the original, but it felt significantly different and was worth the 20$ new I paid for it.

Sure in Dragon Age 2's case the DLC was shit, and a cash grab but that's EA for you.

The price of the DLC probably started at ?20 too. Doing some more research into this, it seems DLC price drops really aren't that common, even for games that are 5 years old, (edit)especially when comparing them to the price drop rates of the game proper. DLC sales? Yes, definitely more common. But not permanent price drops so much.

I absolutely disagree. DLC's like "Undead Nightmare" or the Borderlands and New Vegas add-ons are easily worth 10 bucks. It's true that a lot of DLC is overpriced (Arkham City, I'm looking at you) but I don't mind paying more for good content.
Exactly. If a developer wants to make a pack of extra skins and weapons, I MIGHT spend a couple dollars on in (not often because what's in the game is usually plenty). If they make what is effectively a new game- with new missions, new storylines, new enemies, etc.- I will happily pay $10-15, or even more.
The Borderlands DLC (and a couple of the Fallout 3 packs) have been the only ones I actually thought were a good value.
The problem is that $10 -15 has become the benchmark price for any old crap...some of which (lets face it) the publisher just carved out to sell separately.

I don't completely agree, but I like this guy.
Most DLC is overpriced, but then again, most games are too.
That's why I rent. If it's good, I'll keep it or just wait for the goty.

That whole philosophy is one of the many, many, many reasons why capitalism is failing.

There really does need to be some kind of benchmark pricing guides for dlc to be honest.
Please elaborate? People (myself included) still seem to be providing goods and services in exchange for money.
Not really a free market if there is only one seller. (e.g. Only Bioware can sell Bioware DLC. Which makes sense, but it undermines free market mechanisms)

Mostly false.
While there needs to be more transparency in pricing structure, Given the wide variety of content and value in DLC a static guideline is not practical.

This too, games get cheaper as time goes on, why the hell doesn't DLC?
This is in direct relation to the digital nature of DLC. Without a physical counterpart to compete with that can be sold, there is no reason to drop the price. Basically this is the model the industry is headed toward as digital distribution becomes pervasive and physical becomes obsolete.

Also on the bethesda vs CoD while I do agree with your point, please also understand that is subject to perspective. A 10$ Bethesda DLC offers you an additional 5 hours of content to the game you will experience maybe twice within the same year? Whereas a CoD map pack might take an hour to try all the new maps, those maps will likely be replayed so often that you end up getting 50+ hours out of that 15$ worth of content.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OT: TheOPs assessment is off. Its illogical to set a static price. The price absolutely should NOT be dictated by what people are willing to pay for it because, well people are stupid and easily manipulated and outright tricked.
DLC pricing should be dictated by how many content hours the player will get out of it in relation to how much effort went into the creation of the content.
Broken Steel was worth way more than 5$, awakening was as valuable as half of DA:O and was decent even if played all on its own. And as previously stated, capitalism just does not fucking work that way.
