I think some of it may come from the fact that the next game, DOTA 2 has been in beta for ages, and although the genre is new for Valve, it's not totally new IP. It's a remake of a Warcraft 3 mod, changed enough to avoid being sued by Blizzard.

I am still expecting it to be good though, and waiting for more good Valve games eventually.

with the money they've been making with steam they could even stop making games at all...
but not. they are not doing it. instead they keep making games. what they do now that they make that much money though is to take their time. they don't have a third party publisher whipping them to meet deadlines. their creativity is allowed to flourish, and they make use of it.
I'm not asking them to rush or anything. I'd rather have quality over quantity anyday.
It's just at this point so many people I know keep hoping for Half-Life, a new Portal, or a new TF2, and I just don't really see that happening any time soon.

I think we all know Valve could release Half Life 3 tomorrow and have it be the most bog-standard CoD-clone on the market and it would still sell in the millions.
True, but Valve isn't for making common, unoriginal shooters. They want to be the game changers (or at least the people who shake it up)

Valve hasnt been a gaming company for years. Its steam. People think they are toiling away at HF3 and they are not, i bet they have done zero work on it. Thing is, none of these valve fanboys seem pissed off they they made ep 1 and 2 yet cancelled ep3. They have canned it, though those fanboys think they will make it even though Valve said they are not going to. They fucked over the fans as the fans bought 2/3 of a story that valve canned. No one moans about it. HL3 may happen in the future, am expecting it to be an ok shooter like HF1 and 2. Same as ep1 and 2 were linear shooters. I played them all, mediocre game play but amazing well done backgrounds that are really immersive.

The one thing i can say, atleast if they are not making a HL3, its because the story and idea isnt good enough for them to bother making it. So i am happy they dont milk their franchises. For me, i would rather have a Portal 3 than a HL3, though Valve have a bad thing with 3's.

Is it wrong that such a thing doesn't really bother me?

Valve's games don't really interest me all that much. I mean I'm sure they're better than EA or Activision.
But I don't really like EA or Activision's games, either. Except EA's Alice and Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

The whole Dota idea? I hear that's a strategy game, so that sounds kind of nice. But most of Valve's games are first person shooters. I don't play first person shooters. I totally don't relate to the game industry today. Everyone is playing games in genres I never played as a kid and probably weren't even that popular. Not popular outside of Doom. First person shooters. I just don't get the genre and I never will.

Doom was one of the few video games out in the world I had no interest in as a child. If I didn't like first person shooters back then, why would I like them today?

I gave on Valve as a game dev ages ago. As far as I'm concerned, they're just the guys who run Steam and make new hats now. I still like em though.

Chell's story may be done but there is still so much that can be done with the Portal world. Besides,

we already saw in HL2 Ep2 that the Black Mesa and Aperture worlds are connected so there's a possibility that Cave Johnson, GlaDOS, Chell and/or the Portal Gun will make a return in HL3.

If there is a Half-Life 3. However that would be in Half-Life not Portal itself.

If you think the shooter market being oversaturated will stop anyone, you haven't been paying attention. Valve was a big part of this, to boot. Well, relatively big, since it takes them fifteen years to make a game.

And let's face it. Valve fans will buy any mediocre product they come up with.

They were a big part of it, but they were just doing their own thing. They made games, with great stories, and the gameplay revolved around shooters. It was everyone else and their dog that decided to drive that genre into the ground.

Valve has released a game *every single year*. They aren't putting out 5 expansion packs anymore to go with them (which was mostly driven by remakes of old games with a new engine), but you still have to go all the way back to 2002 to find a year they didn't release anything. Stop with the valve isn't a game company anymore hysteria until they actually stop releasing games.

Dota 2 is releasing this summer.

I honestly don't know where this "Valve doesn't make games" myth comes from.
It's a sequel to a mod built by other people with the entirety of development being transferring the exact same aesthetics and heroes as the original to the Source engine. Hell they even picked up the Warcraft 3 composer to do the score on this. This is creating a new game in the same way that tracing a picture counts as drawing one.

Not having any interesting ideas didn't stop them from releasing Half Life 2.

Will everyone just stop complaining about Valve for things they don't do? I mean what is the purpose of this thread? Other than to harbor the baseless assumptions of the delusional bunch like how Valve is not a developer anymore which couldn't be anymore wrong. If you no longer care, please spare the rest of us who do, the drama and misleading titles please. I actually thought this was actual news. Instead I found the same tired argument that is getting tiresome even for nerd standarts.

Fine by me, given Valve's current direction I'm willing to bet by this point any new games they made would just be a Micro-transaction Store with no actual game attached

Im sorry but are you trying to claim dota2 and tf2 either require you to spend a penny to get the full experience or are bad games? the last time i bought a valve game was 2009 , left for dead 2 and thats still getting FREE content. is there a game thats got half the free content LFD2 has? because i cant think of one.

Please stop. Don't bring sense into these threads. Don't you know Valve are the Devil? Now lets go on complaining about a series and then talk about how much we don't care about it because God forbid we lose our edge.

How odd, then, that their "own thing" was pretty much the same as everyone else's.

Well, is that worse than pumping out dozens of mediocre games a year? That's a question. Quantity or quality. Besides I'm pretty sure the fact that Half Life 3 and L4D3 will never come out is something of a joke at this point.

I even stated that I had figured that Final Fantasy Versus 13 and Kingdom Hearts 3 were in the same development stage of Half Life 3. Then Square actually announced those games... Just to make me look bad, I'm sure.

Anyway, Valve is hugely successful with Steam and their games are largely beloved. Doubt they go anywhere anytime, soon. Though, I would argue that list of games someone posted is rather underwhelming. Most of those were expansions onto existing games.
