For all its flaws it manages to be pretty consistently entertaining, which is something that a lot of games miss these days. I think much of the charm came in that it didn't take itself too seriously; it was tongue-in-cheek and thoroughly silly with no great delusions of grandeur. A lot of games try to be art and fall flat on their face, weighted down by several tons of melodrama, poor script and abysmal voice acting. NHM didn't try to be anything it wasn't and therein was a certain simplistic beauty, wrapped in quirky visuals and a wonderfully unique style. For some reason, that just did it for me and kept me playing.
