No second thumbstick for PS Move...

Googling around it seems like I'm the only person on the whole wide internet who thinks that the PS Move should have had a thumbstick on it.

To explain...

The typical motion-controlled FPS setup has been defined by the Wii - move your character with the nunchuck/navigation controller, aim and turn with the motion controller. Aiming is done on screen, and turning is achieved by swinging off to the edge of the screen. It works, but it's somewhat clunky to have to swing way off to the side and then center yourself again.

I think Sony missed out on a big thing here by not including a second thumbstick because the best thing would be:
- Move with navigation controller
- Aim with motion controller
- Turn with second thumbstick

The thumbstick would handle the large movements while the motion controller would handle the finer aiming within your field of view, giving the best of both worlds (maybe even better than mouse+keyboard). If Sony wanted to bring motion controls to the FPS crowd they could've really knocked it out of the park by just having that extra thumbstick in there, or at least built into one of those assault rifle style accessories.

It does have a thumb stick on the navigation controller

Unless I am crazy that is a thumb stick or am I just missing the point?

It's actually a panic button. Like on your car keys.

I meant a second thumbstick on the motion controller itself for turning/camera control instead of whooshing your motion controller off to the side.

I can't remember how Metroid on the Wii worked but I thought that worked perfectly fine without a second thumbstick.

Ohh I get it probably since the Wii has only one thumb stick and Sony has not had a single original idea for so long that they can only do something after it has been done better by others.

Bingo!

Though I admit I haven't played a Wii FPS yet so maybe motion controls instead of a second thumbstick are perfectly fine and there isn't any problem that needs fixing. I think it's an idea that warrants further thought though.

Another thing... it may be supported already. I've heard that games which use the navigation controller will also accept the regular controller for that half of the control scheme if you don't have one. If those games don't disable the second thumbstick when you're using the Move then it would only be a matter of creating a peripheral that moves it into a more convenient location.

It does work like that, The nav controller is really just half a PS3 controller. I don't think sony will let you make a peripheral like that though. Who knows.

However a cool thing I've done, using my wiimote on my computer and all. Playing FEAR (the game I tested it with) I made turning based on the accelerometer, not the IR sensor. So I'd just twist my wrist and be able to turn, it was pretty awesome.

...Sadly that didn't work out as well as I had planned it to. I had to use the IR sensor to look up and down, calibration and comfort became an issue. ...Also, spinning around at near light speed is not how you win a gun fight. ...but it was a step in the right direction I thought.

I've also tried using a PS3 controller in conjunction with the Wiimote nunchuk. That was a massive disaster though as you only get 5 buttons to use since if you're moving you need both thumbsticks, it's hard to press the face buttons. However, clever as I am, I got everything down to button sequences (and a very complex GlovePIE script...)

>.> There's a lot of hurdles to jump over with it...

The motion controls function like the second thumbstick, just a bit differently. If you play Echochrome 2 you'll see what I mean.

Almost everything released these days are just improvements on what other people did.

Kinect, Eyetoy. Move, Wii. HDTV, SDTV. Blu-Ray, DVD, VCR.

I could see you pressing that and the PS3 just starts yelling "FUCK OFF"
That genuinely made me giggle like a inane moron.
