1) She says that it doesn't workxaszatm said:The actually support goes like this. Soleil has a problem when she sees pretty girls. She faints. This normally isn't too problematic except this happens on the battlefield. She goes to M!Kamui for help on this matter. M!Kamui gives Soleil a magic potion that, in her eyes, reverses the genders. This somehow works (look, if the controversy was on how idiotic this support is, I'd get it. Supports quality range from great to wtf were you smoking, ok?). Also, Soleil somehow falls in love with M!Kamui (Again, quality not the point here). Given the Soleil is both mechanically and narratively more inclined to like girls over boys (though she is bisexual), many people are seeing this conversation as subtly implying gay erasure. I'm...not to sure about that honestly.
All it does is temporarily flip what genders people appear as to her. So she sees guys as girls and girls as guys. The MC tells her this immediately after the fact. His plan was to simply get her used to the female form by sticking with her, and she instead goes off to ogle the male (now female in her eyes) guards. Either way, she comes back later and says it didn't work; that she still gets hot and bothered around cute girls.xaszatm said:The magic potion seems to either reverse what the person's sex actually is or it gives her more confidence.
I will give the game this. This is by far the worst support conversation in the game. Nothing comes close. The writing actually has gotten better, though still not at the heights it once was. It's just that, ever since supports now end with marriage and most likely children, these marriage scenarios feel half-baked at best. It IS a remarkable feat that I only found 5 of the supports garbage with the rest ranging from ok to pretty damn good.Souplex said:...Man, the writing of the Fire Emblem series has really gone downhill in recent years.
I miss the brilliance of the Radiant cycle.
I was out, but The Mary Sue, Destructoid, and the International Business Times all reported on this using the tumblr post as a source. So, yeah, this IS getting media attention.EternallyBored said:What press are you talking about? The only places I've seen talking about it is this forum and 4chan itself when the translation was first posted, even the OP says that he's only seen it talked about on a couple forums, the press seems to be ignoring this entirely, as even the click baity websites usually know better than to blindly trust anything from 4chan.Aiddon said:Because the people bringing it up are claiming the support is about "fixing" Soleil's attraction to women or that Kamui was essentially engaging in date rape by putting powder in her tea in order for the effect to happen. It's what the press likes to grasp onto to make themselves feel open or as critics of homophobia, misogyny, sexism, racism, etc...before then hyping titles that are rife with homophobia, misogyny, sexism, racism, xenophobia and forgetting about Soleil and her issues altogether. And that's before we get into how accurate this translation really is or whether or not it's just 4Chan fucking with people.SquallTheBlade said:Actually Kamui did this so he can make her feel comfortable around girls by making her stay close to him while she sees him as a girl. Here is some of the dialogue that explains it.Mykal Stype said:That makes no damn sense. She faints when she sees girls on the battlefield, so they use a potion to switch genders in her mind. If this is like any other Fire Emblem game, most of the enemy soldiers are males. So if you switch them up in her head, all of a sudden the battlefield has switched from a sausage fest to a taco Tuesday. Wouldn't that mean she from then on is passed out almost all of the time? This has to be a mistranslation or just the stupidest thing ever.
Soleil: ??. ? Y-You? who are you again?
Kamui: It's me. Kamui.
Soleil: E-Ehhhhhh!? B-But... those eyes. they could only belong to a girl!?
Kamui: Seems it was a great success.
Soleil: Success. uh? I have no clue what you're talking about...
Kamui: Right now you?re seeing me as a girl. Isn't that right?
Soleil: Y-Yes. Completely.
>Kamui: I managed to get my hands on a kind of magic powder? I'm really sorry, but a little while ago, I poured some of it into your drink. The person who drinks that powder... somehow becomes able to see other people as the gender opposite what they actually are!
Soleil: H-Huh!? So I can see you as a girl!!?
Kamui: Yes. After what you said, I wanted to resolve your concerns, so I thought it over a little. And it led me to a conclusion. Seeing me as a girl, you can use me to overcome your issues. From now on I?ll get closer to you until you can tolerate being around me without fainting.
Soleil: E-Ehhhh!? I-I'm glad you feel that way but? I have a very specific type... and besides, I mean, you're Kamui...
Kamui: Please move closer to me. Look deeeeep into my eyes.
Soleil: Huh!? W-What... this feeling, it's... kind of uncomfortable? but I?m also getting a little... excited... ... Hey, Kamui. Could you try saying my name...
Kamui: Soleil.
Soleil: ... C-Can you do it in a higher voice? F-For... realism's sake...
Kamui: ... Understood. Soleil.
Soleil: Ugh!
Kamui: Thank you for saving our city! You were so strong and cool!
Soleil: Hauu!
Kamui: How was that? I tried to be like that girl from the town...
Again, why are people getting so upset over this?
I find it really silly that you seem to be slamming the media for jumping on non-stories to grab attention when the media seems to be completely silent on this front, unless random forum posters now count as the media. You seem to be doing the same thing you accuse the media of doing, jumping the gun to make a point about something without actually gathering all the facts or using context to get the whole story.
That's schoolgirl lesbianism for ya; it's actually quite common in Japanese society, not just an anime thing (Class S relationships and all that). Oh well, give it a week and we'll all move on.valium said:people who dont understand japanese archetypes, or japanese humor, get upset because of their ignorance. fact-checking apparently a concept as foreign as the mysterious land known as japan.
let me be honest though, and say that this soleil character and the way she is acting is TERRIBLE.
why you might ask?
BECAUSE IT IS AN ANNOYINGLY OVERDONE ARCHETYPE. the last 10 years has had this archetype show up in every single god damn manga and anime. it is reaching a point where the tsundere is getting some competition in being the archetype I hate the most.
or maybe I am just getting old and japanese things were always this ONLY strictly archetype mess.
pretty much all that needed to be said in the thread.ZiggyE said:It's pretty fucking sad that sites like Destructoid and IBT are willing to source a fucking tumblr post by someone who has not even played the game in order to help spread a controversy that doesn't accurately reflect reality.
Fortunately, Fire Emblem fans have gone out of their way to explain the whole situation for people who haven't played the game.

There's no homophobia, it's nothing dodgy (unless certain anime cliches aren't to your palette). It's just the easily offended getting worked up about nothing yet again and game journalists trying to manufacturer a controversy through the yellow journalism they're so well known for.
GamesNosh wrote a good article about the whole thing http://gamesnosh.com/fire-emblem-homophobia-fates-is-hit-with-gay-controversy/
His point still remains, both Fates and Awakening have utilized more anime tropes in their characters than previous titles.Aiddon said:That's schoolgirl lesbianism for ya; it's actually quite common in Japanese society, not just an anime thing (Class S relationships and all that). Poor writing? It's some idiot using a rubbish translation tool on an Eastern language game.Fox12 said:Yeah, I don't think arguing the fine points makes much difference here. It's because your character drugs her drink behind her back. I mean really that is nuts no matter what excuse you attach to it. You can't un-creep that.Adeptus Aspartem said:And it's definitly not date rape, wtf. How do people come up with that stuff?

Which seems to be supported by everything I've read in the links in this thread.
Bleeeergh.
Not personally angry/offended/outraged or whatever, but my eyes are threatening to roll clear out of their sockets.
Well, that's slightly diffrent than: She goes to M!Kamui for help on this matter. M!Kamui gives Soleil a magic potion that, in her eyes, reverses the genders.nomotog said:It's because your character drugs her drink behind her back. When I said you can't un-creep that, it was a invite to try, but well we are here, doing it to help doesn't help. It just makes it possibly more creepy as your forming an ends justify secret drugging thing. It tries to turn something creepy into something not creepy and that just makes it all the more creepy. And doing it to help doesn't address the big problem with secret drugging. The secret part. I mean if it was a consensual thing, then it wouldn't have the creepy date rape vibe. (There would still be other boggling things involved here, but I'm not going to unpack this. There is just too much to unpack I say we leave the suit case by the door and not talk.)Adeptus Aspartem said:Well, that's slightly diffrent than: She goes to M!Kamui for help on this matter. Which sounds like: "Hey, can you help me?" - "Yes, drink this".
But even if he did so without her noticing the intention is helping her and there's no rape happening. So.. daterape?
It's maybe an old trope, i give you that à la: "I want to help, but have to do it behind that persons back - oops, great misunderstanding/accident happens".
That's why I said there's no point in talking about it until it comes out. Either way, I couldn't care less. I'll buy it regardless.Elementary - Dear Watson said:Poor writing? There is a chinese restraunt near me called 'Legal Food' because it is a terrible translation from something in Manderin that originally meant 'good food'.
A character using a 'drug' potion to make another character fall in love with them sounds less like 'date rape' and more of a cartoony Cupid scene...
