But being shot in the leg or shoulder is waaaaaay more fatal that being shot in the torso.

Though if you get shot in the femoral artery, which is in the leg, it pretty much is instant death, since you'll bleed to death in a few seconds.

Pretty much everything about the Wing Commander movie, but specifically the scene where the ship is hiding in a crater, and this somehow makes them invisible to enemy scanners, but they have to be quiet because those same scanners can somehow detect sound waves through a vacuum.

Explosions. There hasn't been a single hollywood movie that has gotten explosions right. People are standing right next to big (and little) blasts and getting knocked back a little - when in reality, they would die from all their organs liquifying.

Worst example: Mission Impossible 3, on the bridge. Tom Cruise runs away from a Missile explosion that hits about 5 metres behind him, and all that happens is he gets thrown into a car.
At that distance he should have been dead, not mildly inconvenienced.

Also, I'm willing to excuse the "no sound in space" thing if it serves to increase dramatic tension and the movie/show doesn't make pretensions about absolute sci-fi realism. Think about it, would the original Star Wars movies have really been improved upon if they just cut out all the TIE fighter/X-Wing engine and laser canon noises?

For the things that do get to me though, it's how non incendiary grenades and bullets can just casually cause cars, gas stations, and propane tanks to explode. Here's an It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia clip that makes fun of this misconception:

I forgot which episode it was, but on Law and Order: SVU a man claimed to be raped by three women. Benson wanted to investigate, but Stabler resisted, saying things like 'men can't be raped by women unless they've been drugged' and 'If he gets an erection, it's consent'. I'm paraphrasing of course. I don't agree with him, but that's not what I thought was stupid: No one mentioned that if he had fought these three women, chances are, he would be the defendant and they would be pressing charges against him. To the average person, saying "I had too, they were going to tie me down and rape me," makes as much sense as "I had too, they were going to chop me up and eat me."

It's been a while since I saw that episode, so I might not have the details right, but I do remember saying to myself "That's stupid"

When somebodies sentient robot starts philosophising, absolutely nobody thinks that the best solution is to use a nonsentient machine for that purpose. No, somehow the only action they could think of is to build another sentient machine.

Though, since they're just going to be workhorses, why bother making sentient machines? The only logical reason for making a sentient machine is if you wanted it to be a person, which would mean it wouldn't be rebelling against you because you, and probably ONLY you, treat it like a person.

1) An awesome Marine for any amount of time longer that 8 years will be a Gunnery Sergeant at least. Staff sergeant after double digits? My recruiter was a staff sergeant in about 6 :-/

2) Forward Operating Base, the FOB. We don't sound it out, we say it like it's a word... the fob (there is 1 exception, the Command Operations Center. We sound out COC because of obvious reasons)

3) Who the hell uses a visible laser to laser designate???

4) Missiles are obviously driven by very short Asian women since they seem to only go about 50 mph.

5) No combat Marine is going to confront his platoon sergeant in the middle of a damn fight.

6) This is more a personal immersion breaker but the M249 SAW doesn't sound like an M240 and the ACOG reticle doesn't look like that.

7) An orange bus... that's incognito

8) While we're on the bus topic, an M67 frag grenade isn't incendiary so unless you drop it into a puddle of gasoline it's not going to set off the gas station. It'll probably cause a fuel leak but that's about it.

My good Sir, I like to continue you list, although this is more generally about Hollywoods view of the military:

* All sergeants aren't evil, all liutenants aren't badasses, all captains aren't wise father figures.

* You more or less never ever fire an assault rifle on full auto, unless you want to burn you hand of and are sitting inside an ammunitions bunker.

* Bulletproof vests aren't bulletproof.

* As you said: Grenades, exposives and RPGs are not fuel bombs.

* You don't survive a explosion just because you jumped out of the (missplaced fireball). Shrapnel, it's a real thing.

* Taking cover behind a wooden wall/table/car door will only make you become shot through a wooden wall/table/car door.

* Why would anyone wear their ammobelt (for belt-fed MGs) around their neck/on their chest? Trust me there is both pockets, bags and boxes designed to transport that.

One thing that really annoys me is when any film tries to include or is based on Greek mythology, and then just tears the stories apart. For example, The Immortals. As far as pure action was concerned, that movie was awesome. PEOPLES' HEADS EXPLODED. However, holy crap they got the mythology wrong in so many ways. The only points that I remember vividly are:

1) Titans are not tribal men with really dry skin on speed. They were huge, powerful beings who fathered the gods. Also, there are only like 12 of them. Not the unlimited amount the movie displayed.

2) In the movie, Zeus and Athena appeared to have a lot of sexual tension. While the Zeus of Greek mythology pretty much had sex with anything that moved, Athena was his daughter. There was no romantic relations between the two of them whatsoever.

I dunno, maybe I just like Greek mythology too much. Either way, Hollywood sucks at keeping the facts straight

In it's defense, the movie wasn't trying to get the facts right. If I remember correctly, the art style, and general look of it, was to be more influenced of the renaissance than actual greek paintings and stories, so I don't think it counts.

Don't know if anyone's said this yet, only read the first two pages. But phasing out is something that irks me in every sci-fi show. Really now Hollywood? You don't think that if you could walk through any object you would also be pulled down by earths gravity, through the floor?
If they actually gave a reason for this, like say, the phasing out also suspends gravity it'd be more fine. You'd still be facing the problem of being frictionless though. Meaning you can't move or change your already ongoing course.
